60.000 to 80.000 people celebrated the victory of the "Red Sox" in Boston. However, police went crazy and shot a 22-year old girl with a "non"-lethal weapon in the eye. She died. There was no specific action she did, there were no "riots" around her, nothing. She was just celebrating and chanting with others. Meantime police is trained to see the enemy in us, the people: this is what we learn from this murder. Here are some reports and links: read full story / add a comment

Some years ago, when I worked in a Swedish multinational, it issued a communication from HQ which read: 'Mr. X has asked to be relieved of his position as President of Y Division (the biggest in the group)..We wish Mr. X well in his future career.' Mr. X of course go a pay-off to keep his trap shut and agree to a 2 yr non-compete clause. He was soon forgotten and the usual self-serving tripe about 'Group culture' continued to be peddled as if nothing had happened. read full story / add a comment

Kerry gets nowhere because he says he would do the same thing Bush did, only differently. 'What I want to do is change the dynamics on the ground,' Kerry volunteered. 'And you have to do that by beginning to not back off of Falluja and other places and send the wrong message to terrorists. You've got to show you're serious.' A Scottish anti-nuke activist yesterday told the local court near Faslane nuke base that until the courtroom was accessible to all the public (people in wheelchairs included) it surely couldn't be said to be a place where fair and public tribunals are held. This press release reminds me, I don't recall seeing a ramp or lift at the entrance to Ennis courthouse, where Mary Kelly is on trial again today. Hmmm. read full story / add a comment

UCD Labour Youth will welcome former Irish Locomotive Drivers Association activist Brendan Ogle to Belfield this Wednesday. Ogle, now involved in the ATGWU, was a major player in the recognition dispute at Iarnród Éireann in 2000. He has a unique insight into trade unionism and industrial relations in ireland and is the author of a recent book, "Off the Rails: The Story of ILDA," in which much of the dispute is summarised from a worker's perspective. Ogle will speak on the topic "Trade Unionism and Social Partnership Today" and the event will comprise a brief introduction and a questions and answers session. The meeting will take place in Theatre R of the Arts Block at 6pm on Wednesday, October 27th. All are welcome to what is bound to be a fascinating insight into the contentious world of Irish trade unionism and industrial relations.
