 Women's rights are the key A muslim author makes the point that social change in the Arab world can only come from treating women better. The warfare, technological backwardness and relative poverty that many Arab countries is suffer is due to the maltreatment of women. How can any society advance with one half of its members held in chains? Why should women not enjoy equal rights with men just because the Koran says they are inferior. It's about time the Arab world woke up and joined the 21st century. Why is the level of public debate so low in the Arab media? Why is so much anti-Semitic hatred fomented in Arab society? Why is the conflict with Israel used as an excuse for doing nothing to bring emancipation to women? Why are there still so many honour killings of women in the Arab world that generally go unpunished? These are all urgent questions that few people in the anti-war movement dare to entertain or debate. Yet, I don't see why this subject should be taboo on the left.
