Cearnóg na gCainteoirí/Speakers Square will be run on a first come first serve basis. Intending speakers will write their names on the back of chalk boards and when their turn arises to speak will write their issues on the front. Speakers will be encouraged to speak in any language, provided it's not foul language. Until a special dispensation is sought (if it really need be sought), the law of the land will apply as it does nationwide - In that it is an offence to incite hatred or slander anyone in public.
The last time Dublin had a speaker's arena was on Elverys Corner (by the GPO) up until the 1950s. The city and the world may have changed since then, but there's been no change in the need for people to voice their views.
Opinions are worse for being repressed and better when they are expressed. So Free your thoughts because small voices can make a big noise.

How can "Australia" solve the issues within the Aboriginal Community that have been created by 200 years of imperialism and racism? What should the state do? Should Aboriginal land be given back? Looking to New Zealand for a possible solution, the Maori (the indigenous people there) have been given huge financial compensation for their land being taken by the state; but what has happened there is unfair distribution of land based on pre-existing priveledge innequalities. Australia is in need of a solution that leaves no one behind... Bad Thoughts are a series of discussion that take place in the library space at the Unawarehouse in North Strand. Members and non-members alike are welcome. Bring your ears and be there at 7pm sharp! This event is free. read full story / add a comment

On Friday, 5th November, at 8 p.m. in the Joyce Room of the Metropole Hotel, Mc Curtain St., Cork, a Palestinian organiser for the ISM and an Israeli Anarchist Refusenik will share the platform at a public meeting, and will speak of their experiences as people working for peace and justice in the Middle East, and how violence has damaged both Israeli and Palestinian lives and societies. This public meeting is part of a tour of Ireland and the rest of Europe by these speakers in order to show Europeans that there are more viewpoints on the ground in the Middle East and more possibilities for dialogue, mutual understanding, and mutually respective solutions than the mainstream media would have us in Europe believe. The Cork engagement is hosted by Cork Grassroots Network and the Cork branch of the Workers' Solidarity Movement. read full story / add a comment

A new comprehensive report on the devastating impact of climate change urges Arctic governments to immediately cut their emissions of carbon dioxide. The Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA), produced by more than 250 scientists and six circumpolar indigenous peoples’ organisations, provides incontrovertible proof that climate change is happening in the Arctic and that it will get worse unless emissions of carbon dioxide are cut. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday saw a spontaneous convergence of diverse groups and individuals to plant trees on a site at Ringaskiddy. The aim of the planting was to assert a change of use for this land that up to now has tended to be referred to as "the proposed incinerator site". Now we can find a more beautiful name to call it. read full story / add a comment
