A London hospital allowing male staff to use the women's toilets is the latest employer to bring in EDI policies of dubious legality. The problem, says CJ Strachan, is that employers have become afraid to obey the law.

The war on Iraq was illegal, fraudulent and has killed many tens of thousands of innocent people, and making this war is very probably a war crime. But the Americans commit war crimes every day in Iraq. One such war crime was the Haifa Street massacre, which occurred last week and which was televised. Jonathan Steele has courageously written a clear and insightful analysis of this massacre in today's edition of The Guardian. This posting examines Steele's position and asks why criticism of American war crimes in Iraq is so rare. read full story / add a comment

Former Socialist Workers Party national committee member David Isaacson has joined the CPGB. Tellingly, and not without self-criticism, he details how on the one hand the SWP leadership perpetuates itself, and how, on the other, it depoliticises and demotivates. The result is a not a party but a bureaucratic sect which must be fought from the inside and the out

Many believe that the Socialist Workers Party is going through some kind of crisis. All the signs are there. Attendance at this summer’s Marxism was half that of the previous year. Membership figures cannot be great if Respect can only muster just over 3,000. Where are the 10,000 SWP members of old? East End Offset - the SWP’s printshop - has been sold off, presumably because of financial problems stemming from Respect’s election campaign. The election result itself was a disappointment. read full story / add a comment

This is a sligthly edited version of a press release i received this morning,
The original is released as an internal communication, addressed to members, so I have taken out some contact numbers and personal stuff, as I'm not sure they would want it posted here.

I'm sure it would be fine to send urgent queries to [email protected], marked attn. ISNFF. read full story / add a comment

He passed away at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday afternoon, surrounded by his friends and family, his publicist confirmed.

Finally, finally, my trial date is set for 5th October at Limerick Circuit Court. I'd be really grateful to see some familiar faces there, and I hope it will be even better than the last one ( see: http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=22266 ). I lodged an appeal after Judge Mangan found me guilty. He didn't give a reason, and I think it's worth another shot. Los Angeles and Washington, DC, Sept. 15, 2004 – California Superior Court Judge Victoria Chaney yesterday rejected an attempt by Unocal Corp. to dismiss a lawsuit charging it is responsible for human rights abuses committed by the notoriously brutal Burmese military on behalf of Unocal’s Yadana Pipeline project in southern Burma. The Court’s denial of the oil company’s motion for a judgment in their favor clears the way for a jury trial to begin after eight years of litigation. read full story / add a comment
