With a headline like that the story really does deserve a place in the "other press" section, no?

It's David Shayler again. For those who don't remember him, he was a MI5 whistleblower whose revelations included such delights as one of the general knowledge questions he was asked upon being recruited (put the English titles of nobility in order*) and that the Brits wanted to assassinate Colonel Ghadaffi back in the days before we spellt his name Qhadaffi. (with a Q).

Since the whistleblowing, was the exile with spy girlfriend in France, and then things got juicy. read full story / add a comment

Burmas heroic Democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested and charged with breach of the terms of house arrest in May 2009, just days before her current term of house arrest was due to end. The lengthy trial has now ended and the Nobel Peace Prize winner has been found guilty and sentenced to three years jail and hard labour. However, in a move surely aimed at avoiding international sanctions, Home Affairs minister General Maung Oo said outside the court that military ruler Than Shwe had signed a special order suspending the sentence and ordered that Suu Kyi should spend 18 months under house arrest. read full story / add a comment

Johnson: The priest, the clown and the life of protest
By Bill Johnson

Denver Post Columnist

Father Carl Kabat awoke early Thursday morning, put on his clerical
collar, grabbed his clown suit and quietly strolled out of his
longtime friend's Arvada home.

William Strabala, who has known the Catholic priest since their days
in the seminary more than 50 years ago and had hosted him since he
arrived from St. Louis, simply sighed. It was pointless, he knew, to
attempt to talk the 75-year-old priest out of what he was about to do. read full story / add a comment

This article analyses the reasons behind the current show trials of dissidents in Iran and argues that no honest rational person should be taken in by the lies of Iranian Regimes.

The show trial of August 1 when a number of prominent ‘reformists’ appeared on Iranian state TV to ‘thank their interrogators’ before repenting – was not the first such event in the Islamic republic’s history. Leaders of the ‘official communist’ Tudeh Party were similarly paraded on Iranian TV to denounce their own actions in the 1980s, while in the 1990s we had the trials of ‘rogue’ elements of the ministry of intelligence. read full story / add a comment
