Eoghan Harris never lets up on the killers of Jerry McCabe. But what does he have to say about the killers of RUC inspector Elliott? Harris was a member of Official Sinn Fein when this killing took place. The OIRA were supposedly on ceasefire for 2 1/2 years. There is no record of Harris condemning the killing of Insp Elliot at the timet. Will he condemn it now and explain why he thought it was ok in 1974? Could it be that Harris is a hypocrite? Two men have been arrested by detectives investigating the murder of a policeman shot dead during a bank robbery in Northern Ireland almost 40 years ago. RUC Inspector Bill Elliott was gunned down as he attended the scene of the robbery in north Belfast in 1974. The 58- and 61-year-old suspects were detained in Co Antrim this morning. They have been taken to the police’s serious crime suite in Antrim town for questioning. Mr Elliott was driving on his own when he heard news that a robbery was under way at the Ulster Bank in the Rathcoole area in September 1974. The 48-year-old, who was married with a son, raced to the scene and died after a shootout with republicans from the Official IRA who were armed with two submachine guns and a pistol. read full story / add a comment

Got this from LabourStart yesterday. This is very disturbing and sinister, and it's not happening in some remote, tin-pot, 3rd World dictatorship!! This is happening in Europe! In Greece, a European Union (EU) Member. And what are the EU, who are so quick to blabber and bleat on about human right's abuses in Libya, Iran, Syria, and other places safely removed from Europe, doing and saying about this? Surprise! Surprise! Nothing, as it's the EU and their austerity policies that have led to this, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the EU is orchestrating this behind the scenes as an attempt to smash Protests by the People and the Workers against their failed austerity policies. read full story / add a comment

Aisling Byrne writes about the US plans for regime change in Syria. Byrne is not a lackey of the Syrian regime, in this article she is critical of it and how it has handled the crisis. She worked in Syria and saw the Secret Police in action. But she says: what may have began as popular protests, initially focused on local issues and incidents (including the case of the torture of young boys in Dera'a by security forces) were rapidly hijacked by this wider strategic project for regime change. "War with Iran is already here," wrote a leading Israeli commentator recently, describing "the combination of covert warfare and international pressure" being applied to Iran. Although not mentioned, the "strategic prize" of the first stage of this war on Iran is Syria; the first campaign in a much wider sectarian power-bid. "Other than the collapse of the Islamic Republic itself," Saudi King Abdullah was reported to have said last summer, "nothing would weaken Iran more than losing Syria." The relentless march to War continues. Peter Symonds writes on how the EU sanctions are part of the Imperialist war-drive against Iran. Sanctions are War by other means. Full text at link. European Union’s (EU) in-principle decision on Wednesday to impose an embargo on oil imports from Iran has further escalated the danger of military conflict in the Persian Gulf. The EU move dovetails with President Obama’s signing on Saturday of US legislation designed to cripple the Iranian banking system and cut the country’s oil exports. read full story / add a comment

I'm shocked but not surprised to see yet another stealth tax by the Government this time on 115000 Pensioners who have their own as well as the State Pension. Many of them are now going to be up to €4400 per year for a single person or €8800 per year for a couple worse off because they'll now be paying tax on their Pensions which they worked hard for all their lives. Why don't the Revenue Commissioners go after all the big tax evaders instead of vulnerable and soft targets like the Pensioners? Not that the Pensioners will be a pushover as they showed a few years ago when they resisted the Government's attack on their Medical Cards. read full story / add a comment

An issue that dwarfs in death and suffering the murders of 911 that you will not hear politicians debating or newspapers or news broadcasts covering is that one human being is dying every nine second from starvation in the world as it is presently spiritually, politically and economically organized. One person dies every nine seconds from starvation in a world that produces 3,500 calories per person per day and 4.2 pounds of food per person per day. That is premeditated, intentional, unjustified homicidal violence, murder. That is the warring of one group or class or cast of human beings against another. That is class warfare of the most hideous kind—class genocide. Yet, not a peep, let alone an impassioned daily outcry, from those who own the microphones and those who are granted access to them. Why? Do some human beings have worth, count, and others not? read full story / add a comment

The coming year will be a challenging one for working-class people in Ireland and across Europe. The threats facing us are manifold. Economically people are faced with the consequences of the austerity programme imposed on them by the EU political and financial elite. For Irish Republicans increasing repression highlights the reality of the old imperialism of British rule in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

We strongly condemn Thursday’s massacre at Sirnak in which 36 civilian Kurds were killed by Turkish air strikes. This year more than 4,500 people have been arrested under nebulous “terrorism” charges in Turkey, including dozens of journalists last week. This AKP-directed pogram, known as the KCK Case, began in 2009 against any Kurdish dissent in Turkey. Mayors, local councillors, journalists, human rights activists and Kurdish party workers are targeted. read full story / add a comment
