After 30+ years the DFRC swimming pool in Dundrum / Ballinteer closed on July 15th. We are holding this public meeting to kick start the campaign to get a new pool built.

In 1999 residents in the area were promised a new swimming pool for the Millenium. We were pomised funding was in place and construction would soon begin....

Now we are told there is not enough money to build it. read full story / add a comment

Much debate has been taking place over the last few days regarding the success, or not, of the occupation of the department of education on Tuesday. By engaging in an occupation we are taking a particular stance. It is a form of direct action which means that the action has a direct effect on the people involved. You take a stance, issue demands, and do not move until those demands are met or you are forcibly removed. If your demands are met you have been victorious if you are removed the fight moves to another day but the victory lies in the fact that you have shown an unflinching belief in your tactics and what you stand for and a commitment to continue to bring the fight to the powers that be. Anything less is a failure. As such the occupation of Tuesday last was, in this regard a failure. read full story / add a comment

Last Saturday afternoon (14/8/04), up to 15 gardai descended on a lone Traveller family, whose trailer was parked just off the South Link Road in Cork City. When the gardai threatened to have the trailer towed away, the mother locked herself into it to prevent it being moved. The gardai broke off the perspex window at the back of the trailer in an attempt to enter it. At this stage, the woman, who is receiving medical attention for depression, took a bread knife and attempted to cut her wrists. Fortunately, the knife was quite blunt and did little damage read full story / add a comment
