Bank of Ireland have achieved their target to recycle 80% of all waste generated in their Head Office in Baggot Street. They began recycling waste in June 2003 and for the past 8 months they have recycled :- * 62 tonnes of cardboard - the equivalent of 992 trees. * 83.33 tonnes of paper. * Saved 1,720 cubic metres of landfill. They now plan to improve waste segregation at source to improve things further and cut the costs of recycling. There are NO under-desk rubbish bins in any of the three buildings; staff have no choice but to recycle all waste. Here's hoping other organisations follow suit. read full story / add a comment

Thursday 4th March, room 3074, Arts Block. The Trinity Anarchist society will show the second part of the documentary of The Battle of Chile (You don't have to have seen the first part in order to understand the second). As with last week the documentary will be introduced by a Chilean trade union activist and anarchist, and followed by a discussion. The Battle of Chile On September 11, 1973, President Salvador Allende's democratically elected Chilean government was overthrown in a bloody coup by General Augusto Pinochet's army. Patricio Guzmán and five colleagues had been filming the political developments in Chile throughout the nine months leading up to that day. The bombing of the Presidential Palace, in which Allende died, would now become the ending for Guzmán's seminal documentary The Battle of Chile (1975-76), an epic chronicle of that country's open and peaceful socialist revolution, and of the violent counter-revolution against it. read full story / add a comment

Earlier this year Hugh Brady held an address that was open to students. During the A&Q period two students asked him questions about accessibility at UCD. One student who uses a wheelchair brought to his attention that not all the entrances and washrooms were accessible to her and other students that she knew. Then another student asked him about getting audio materials for those with visual impairments. To both of these questions he deflected the responsibility to the newly appoint vice-president of ‘students’ and encouraged them to lobby on the issues. read full story / add a comment

Cycle Campaigners renew call for "cycle track network" plans to be scrapped as Dublin figures show 16% drop in cyclists. There is widespread concern among Irish cycling activists - that government "cycling policies" are primarily about facilitating motorists and promoting a switch to mass use of private motorcars. There is established historical precedent for such attempts in other countries. read full story / add a comment

Despite the Minister for Education Noel Dempsey's repeated mantraof social inclusion and widening access to education, the government has systematically targeted the most disadvantaged sectors of Irish society and reneged n virtually all its election promises by introducing cutback after devastating cutback. Since being re-elected in 2002 there has been a constant erosion of funding for schemes aimed at assisting those from disadvantaged backgrounds. read full story / add a comment
