In the eyes of Islamists, Las Vegas is the Sodom and Gomorrah of modern times: a city where women not only bare their bodies but also sell them in the all-engulfing pursuit of the god they call Dollar, while men drown their soulless bodies in alcohol and gamble away their own god, Money. Yet this is where a number of strict-living Islamist terrorists, including the leader of the 9/11 hijackers, Mohamed Atta, and four other 9/11 hijackers spent part of their summer shortly before they committed their evil deed. read full story / add a comment

Active in Gaza and the West Bank, Hamas wants to liberate all of Palestine and establish a radical Islamic state in place of Israel. It is has gained notoriety with its assassinations, car bombs and other acts of terrorism.

Israel and Hamas may currently be locked in deadly combat, but, according to several current and former U.S. intelligence officials, beginning in the late 1970s, Tel Aviv gave direct and indirect financial aid to Hamas over a period of years.

Israel "aided Hamas directly -- the Israelis wanted to use it as a counterbalance to the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization)," said Tony Cordesman, Middle East analyst for the Center for Strategic Studies.

Israel's support for Hamas "was a direct attempt to divide and dilute support for a strong, secular PLO by using a competing religious alternative," said a former senior CIA official.

I couldn't believe my eyes this morning. When I was coming down Henry Street in Dublin they were putting up the street Christmas lights and decorations. Yes you're not seeing things! The Christmas lights and decoration; and it is only the 6TH October; more than 2 1/2 months to Christmas! Far too soon. This is a sign of the growing commercialisation of Christmas. I wonder is this is just an isolated incident; or is this occuring nationwide? Perhaps some other IndyMedia readers might enlighten us? read full story / add a comment

It's always interesting to observe how individuals can be so generous with other people's money. €9,000 for a retirement watch looks certainly like gilding the lily. However, this is just an example of a 'sexy' story that can get public attention while so much else is ignored. read full story / add a comment

By Adam Pasick, UK media correspondent LONDON (Reuters) - A new flexible form of copyright for creative material is set to launch in Britain next month, at a time when "remix culture" is gaining in popularity despite the fact it is often illegal. Creative Commons, a U.S. based non-profit foundation, has created a copyright licence that lets musicians and authors decide what limits to put on their creations -- enabling DJs, for example, to remix music legally. read full story / add a comment
