While in Cobh today, we also met some of the local fishermen who still manage to work despite years of depredation by the pharmaceutical industry in the harbour. We passed on to them copies of this letter printed here which we encourage anyone else with any contacts whatsoever in the fishing community to use to communicate to the the situation to other fishermen. I am also looking for information regarding the state of the fishing industry in Ireland over the last 60 years. I am coming to understand that our fishing rights have been given away as surely as our oil and gas over a longer period. I am convinced that these issues have to be linked in the common consciousness. A significant difference being that fishing, done right is a renewable resource. It ain't being done right now. The sea is being f**ked and so are the fishermen. If only ye could stand together lads. read full story / add a comment

Supposed ‘hard fight’ to secure guarantees on Lisbon Treaty: a clever tactic to mislead says McKenna
national / eu / press release Monday June 22, 2009 12:26 by O. O'C
Not one single word of the Lisbon Treaty will be altered by these guarantees, which is why they do not need to be ratified by the National Parliaments of the 27 Member States. The so called ‘legal guarantees’ are nothing more than an interpretation by EU Heads of State as to what they think the Lisbon Treaty means. However, if the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, it will be the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg which will interpret Lisbon. The EU Court is the only body authorised under the European Treaties to interpret the Treaties themselves and decide how they should be applied. The political decision and agreement of a particular group of EU Prime Ministers and Presidents, which is what we are being presented with, cannot and will not decide what Lisbon means. read full story / add a comment

As of 25 minutes a complete list of those states with embassies in Iran who have opened their doors to injured civil rights protesters has become available. So far only the state of Canada has refused to take in the injured from the ongoing serious unrest in the Iranian capital of the last 24 hours during which there have been over 20 confirmed deaths and untold injuries concurrent with the bombing of the Islamic state's founder's tomb. read full story / add a comment

Carers and their loved ones who receive roll-over respite care in Cherryorchard Hospital have been informed by the HSE that the newly refurbished Beech Unit at Cherryorchard Hospital is to close indefintely. The management at the hospital have told Councillor Brid Smith that the closure of the Beech is due to staff shortages for the Summer months. However, they could not give any guarantees as to when it will reopen. Nurses who are taking annual leave and maternity leave are not being replaced. The HSE embargo on recruitment is once again seriously hurting patients receiving respite care and their families. read full story / add a comment

In this article Yassamine Mather writes about the mass demonstrations in cities across Iran. She points out that these demonstrations show the anger and frustration of the majority of Iranians with political Islam. Full text at link. Early on Saturday morning, the supreme leader congratulated Ahmadinejad, which was seen as official endorsement of the results. But by Sunday pm, under the pressure of impromptu demonstrations, he was forced to reverse this decision, and called on the council of guardians to investigate the other candidates’ complaints. By Monday June 15, with a massive show of force by the opposition - over a million demonstrators on the streets - he was instructing the council of guardians to call for a recount. By Tuesday there was talk of new elections. read full story / add a comment
