Gerry McGeough, who campaigned for the fascist. Justin Barett in the European elections, appeared on WBAI's Radio Free Eireann today. RFE is hosted by John McDonagh, the representative of Republican Sinn Fein in New York. McGeough said that informers were not now even getting a rap on the knuckles. He said an appalling vista presented itself. He appealed to RFE not to let people like Niall O'Dowd off the hook. O'Dowd, said McGeogh, is an empty vessel. read full story / add a comment

Its been just over a year now since the last ISF so maybe we should have another one this year. There has been lots of activism since then and the movement for global justice [or whatever we are called] has a lot to link up about. On top of that the ESF is back this year, this time in Greece. Is anyone bothered? A crowd of us think that people should get together and talk about it. Here's the proposal:

The first ISF Working Groups meeting of 2006 is on Thursday 9th February from 7.30 to 9.00pm
NB Change of venue: THE TEACHERS CLUB, PARNELL SQ., DUBLIN 1 .

A few Dublin-based activists who worked with the ISF Working Groups for the 2003 and 2004, 1st and 2nd ISFs thought it would be good idea to hold a meeting, talk about the following points (below) and see where we go from there. If you would like to come, please read the WSF Charter Of Principles first and see if you are interested, available at: http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/main.php?id_menu=4&cd_language=2 read full story / add a comment

The proposed five-year "field trial" experiment would take place from April 2006 to October 2010.

The plan is to grow potatoes which are resistant to blight and won't have to be sprayed with large quantities of pesticides.

The last time a company, Monsanto, carried out genetically modified (GM) sugar beet trials in Wexford and Cork it sparked a wave of protests and sabotage.

The EPA says it will consider any submissions made to it within the next 28 days about risks to human health and the environment by the release of the GM potatoes.

It appears that no environmental or health impact studies are planned. Following a public announcement in the Irish Independent on 26 January 2006, the deadline for related public submissions to the EPA is 5pm on 22 February 2006.

The members of the association of mothers of the disappeared "plaza Mayo" of Argentina held their last march of resistance yesterday.

In a statement to press their president Hebe de Bonafini, affirmed :-

"We no longer have an enemy in the houses of government"...."with the changes in South America [the elections of / governments of] Fidel, Chávez, Lula, Tabaré, Bachelet. If we do not see that we are blind, we must defend them"
She expressed the opinion that Kirchner's government has offered them the fullest redress possible for the crimes comitted during the Argentine dictatorship(1976-1983) and the near "cover up" in the folowing regime (1983-1989).

We've just heard that a delegation of executives (including four directors) of Shell are going to meet with a select group of TD's in the Dáil on Thursday afternoon.

The delegation will include the delightfully named Dutch former politician Wim Kok.

This meeting is completely outside the mediation process agreed with the government in September.

We will be at the entrance on Kildare Street from 12.15PM -Please join us.
