Kabul: Pace of reconstruction 'frustrating' says military chief From Phil Reeves in Lahore, Pakistan 23 March 2003 As American and British cruise missiles create havoc in Baghdad, a US general has accused the West of failing to do enough to rebuild the last country visited by President Bush's military – Afghanistan. His remarks come amid widespread fury in the international community over the US-British invasion of Iraq, coupled with concern that the onslaught began before adequate preparations had been made for a possible humanitarian crisis. http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia_china/story.jsp?story=389803 read full story / add a comment

[BACKGROUND: In 1917, following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, the British occupied Iraq and established a colonial government. The Arab and Kurdish people of Iraq resisted the British occupation, and by 1920 this had developed into a full scale national revolt, which cost the British dearly. As the Iraqi resistance gained strength, the British resorted to increasingly repressive measures, including the use of posion gas.] NB: Because of formatting problems, quotation marks will appear as stars * read full story / add a comment

Pubs were definitely quieter than usual according to many barmen this weekend in Dublin as ppl either watched the war or football in their own homes - this country badly needs to sober up - why is hash illegal here and it is ok for a 15 year old to walk into an offie and buy a bottle of 'freedom' whiskey? Evidence suggests a missing British air force aircraft returning from an operation in the Gulf was shot down earlier today by a US Patriot missile battery, a British military official said. There was no immediate news of whether the crew survived, and the Ministry of Defence said they were missing. Group Captain Al Lockwood, a spokesman for British forces in the Gulf, said the aircraft may have been shot down over Kuwait in an apparent incident of friendly fire. read full story / add a comment

INLA political prisoner Paddy O'Toole, held for a year in isolation in the punishment bunker of Portlaoise Prison has been driven insane and has been removed to the Dundrum facility for mentally insane prisoners. After a year of cruel and degrading treatment Justice Minister McDowell succeeded in driving him insane. There is concern now for another prisoner subject to the same cruel and degrading treatment in the punishment block. Eddie Heeney, a CIRA prisoner, is already in ill health. Where are our civil libertarians? Are they only concerned with civil liberties in far-off lands? read full story / add a comment

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush reviewed the latest reports of fighting along the Iraqi frontlines on Saturday and warned Americans the war could be "longer and more difficult" than some thought. As U.S.-led forces rolled toward Baghdad, Bush convened his war council at the Camp David presidential retreat in rural Maryland and vowed to use "decisive force" to bring down the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, whose fate was unclear after a Wednesday night missile strike. Bush also spoke by telephone with Prime Minister Tony Blair, who ordered British troops into action as part of the U.S.-led coalition. They discussed "progress of the war" and efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people, White House spokeswoman Ashley Snee said. read full story / add a comment |
