Over 3000 people were at tonight's anti-war demonstration at the US embassy. There were many passionate speaches from many including Michael D Higgins(Labour), Kieran Allen (Socialist Worker) and Patricia McKenna (Green Party) as well as a young Libyan child who spoke on behalf of the children of the Middle Eastand. After speeches and chanting the crowd marched to the British Embassy where there was more chanting and then a minute silence to reflect the silence in Baghdad tonight as they wait for another night of bombing. read full story / add a comment

By any conventional military measure Saddam Hussein is a dwarf and the Iraqi armed forces are much weaker than they were on the eve of “The Mother of All Battles”. Saddam probably has a considerable chemical and biological weapons program, but, in the absence of a powerful conventional force, it is more or less all he has and is best suited for deterrence. As for nuclear weapons, he does not have them yet. Should he acquire them, then the American arsenal that, at the height of the Cold War, succeeded in deterring 2,300 Soviet delivery vehicles with perhaps 10,000 warheads (plus another 10,000 in reserve) should be more than sufficient to deter Saddam as well. In the mind of countless people around the world, including many Americans, all of this raises the question why the US appears determined to make war against Saddam at this time. read full story / add a comment

The Financial Times reports that Ben Tonra, lecturer in politics at U.C.D. said: 'There's neither precedent nor principle for this current Irish policy, simply political expediency'. The attack against Iraq has started. Bush and his allies will spread death and horror among the Iraqi population. However, not all Americans do support their government's actions. An American Vietnam Veteran visited Greece last month. After his visit the American groups Veterans for Peace and Citizen Soldier formed an appeal to American GIs serving in Europe. You are all prompted to distribute it. read full story / add a comment
