Capitalism is afraid to let the depression go its full course to thereby cleanse the system because of the potential threat from the working class. Indeed capitalism has become so contradictory that even a very deep downturn may not save it from deep stagnation. The cyclical downturn is now no longer sufficient as it would have been in the 19th century. Now we need cyclical world wars. read full story / add a comment

Sixteen workers at a Co-op Superstore in New Square, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork are holding a sit-in protest as a result of the company announcing redundancies without discussions with their union. The company, which is partly owned by Dairygold and their shareholders, have also announced the closure of their Patrick Street store in Fermoy, Co. With a headline like that the story really does deserve a place in the "other press" section, no? It's David Shayler again. For those who don't remember him, he was a MI5 whistleblower whose revelations included such delights as one of the general knowledge questions he was asked upon being recruited (put the English titles of nobility in order*) and that the Brits wanted to assassinate Colonel Ghadaffi back in the days before we spellt his name Qhadaffi. The lengthy trial has now ended and the Nobel Peace Prize winner has been found guilty and sentenced to three years jail and hard labour. However, in a move surely aimed at avoiding international sanctions, Home Affairs minister General Maung Oo said outside the court that military ruler Than Shwe had signed a special order suspending the sentence and ordered that Suu Kyi should spend 18 months under house arrest. read full story / add a comment
