by Robert Fisk The Independent [UK] December 15, 2004 Baha Mousa, 26, was working as a hotel receptionist in Basra 14 months ago when British troops surrounded the building and arrested seven men. They were taken to a British base and were reportedly hooded and beaten. Two days later, Mousa was dead. His family was given $3,000 in compensation and rejected a further $5,000. What they wanted was justice. Yesterday, after more than a year of official stonewalling, his relatives won a 'historic' ruling to force the MoD to hold an independent inquiry. Will the truth now be known? read full story / add a comment

The Other America. BP, US Steel and other corporations bribed the politicians of Indiana to reassess their tax base and reduce their tax liability. The reduction of taxes that followed was then passed onto the taxes on the homes of working class people. 200,000 families are now estimated to be in danger of losing their homes. But a fight back is under way. Cant't Pay Won't Pay with the the bottom line being that nobody will loose their home. These are the main ideas of the campaign. The tactics are mass fight to win action exposing the politicians and the corporations and their corrupt rotten system. Over 130 people met to launch this campaign in Hammond Indiana on monday night. The success of last night's meeting far surpassed anything could have been hoped for. Over 130 residents came out to the meeting in bitter cold temperatures of 20 below. The campaign is under way. The model of rule (government in the hands of the few) hasn’t changed since the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt! Eliminating the voice of the people at the community level is a mistake. If community leaders – elected by the people and representing the people at all times – were able to keep our leaders in check and in accord with the wishes of the majority we would prevent government taking a course that nearly half the population oppose. In this way government’s actions would truly reflect the wishes of the majority or be adjusted in a balanced compromise when necessary. To allow a government to rule unchecked for a number of years is the height of folly. read full story / add a comment

The observations and re-actions of various ‘experts’ to events in the Ukraine amuse some analysts. Did anyone expect the US not to intervene, do leopards change their spots? Have we all forgotten that the US government is merely a pawn of Corporate Capitalism? If it wasn’t an orange scarf it may just as well have been pink – let’s not miss the ‘forest for the trees’ (and in some cases the veins of the leaves.) read full story / add a comment

France has ordered the TV station which is closely associated with terror groups to stop broadcasting to France tomorrow by tomorrow morning. The decision has been made after continuous abuse of satelite communication and trans-national media rules, norms and values. The decision follows an earlier confiscation of their hardware by the US security forces. read full story / add a comment

With this article I want to express my worriness about the recent violation of the rights of Mohammed B, the suspect of the murder on the Dutch cineaste van Gogh, which is not only an attack on his rights, but can also lead to a further erosion of the Dutch judicial system, which is based on the protection of the rights of a defendant and a fair trial. read full story / add a comment

James Connolly is probably the single most important figure in the history of the Irish left. He was an organiser in the IWW in the USA but in Ireland is best known for his role in building the syndicalist phase of Irish union movement and for involving the armed defence body of that union, the Irish Citizens' Army in the 1916 nationalist insurrection. This left a legacy claimed at one time or another not only by all the Irish left parties but also by the nationalists of Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein. read full story / add a comment

Sunday the 19th of December at the UnaWarehouse (formerly Spacecraft) we will be hosting a *potluck* with films, fun, and some colouring. Bring a dish or dessert to share. Fun starts from early afternoon. We also thought we'd ask our friends to come with a *new* unwrapped gift to be donated to children whose mothers are staying at Haven House in Phibsboro. Gifts should be appropriate for kids up to 13yrs. Haven House is often overlooked in xmas charity time because it is a hostel for homeless women. (Alternately, gift donations can be left in at Red Ink Books & Zines/Murder City Records on Fownes Street in Temple Bar) Ring or text us for more info. Check out the Bad Books website for a map to the location and for more information on Haven House. read full story / add a comment

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A portrait of President Bush using monkeys to form his image led to the closure of a New York art exhibition over the weekend and anguished protests on Monday over freedom of expression. "Bush Monkeys," a small acrylic on canvas by Chris Savido, created the stir at the Chelsea Market public space, leading the market's managers to close down the 60-piece show that was scheduled to stay up for the next month. read full story / add a comment
