In order to evolve from our current , stagnant state as human beings; to progress to a higher level of understanding and purpose; to realise radical cultural change and evolution...and to alleviate conflict around the world; we must stop competing against each other for energy. This can only be achieved if we learn how to fill ourselves with energy from sources other than each other. read full story / add a comment

Depends really on which culture they live in. Chile remembers the coup d'etat that toppled Alende's legitmate government and began Pinochet's dictatorship. Catalonia marks it's independence day, anniversary of it's 1714 defeat by Bourbon Spanish forces. England has but almost forgotten the Levelers petition delivered to Parliament this day 1648 with over 40,000 signatures claiming basic rights. read full story / add a comment

In 1974, Spain, Portugal and Greece were run by dictatorships and together with the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, democracy in Europe was an endangered specie. By joining the EU, countries have strenghthened their democratic structures and the same opportunity is available to Turkey. In recent times, the human rights situation has improved and the repression of the culture of the minority Kurdish population has been eased. read full story / add a comment

Vincent Browne has taken on a significant challenge. 'Quality investigative reporting' doesn't come cheap, which must be the reason why Irish newspapers allocate insignificant resources to it. His planned new magazine will likely depend largely on freelance journalists, paid by article while material such as US book reviews is easily available online for those who are interested. Good content depends on good research. Can it provide compelling material that is not available in so many other publications? read full story / add a comment

man was arrested today after attacking the Downing Street security gates with a sledgehammer, police said. The man, thought to be in his 60s, is not thought to have caused much damage beyond scratching the paintwork on the gates. Scotland Yard said the attack is not believed to be terrorist-related. The incident occurred at around 6.20am this morning and was over in a matter of seconds. The man was arrested by police on suspicion of causing criminal damage and taken to a central London police station, where he remains. read full story / add a comment

I wish to publish the following translation I have made of an editorial in one of the most important electronic newspaper written in Catalan, www.vilaweb.com. This editorial, entitled "Ní thuigim Brian", was published on the 14th of June and describes Brian Cowen's particular attitude towards the language of a nation, the Catalan countries, that has always been a close friend of Ireland. This editorial must be placed within the context that at that stage the (new) Spanish government had shown, possibly for the first time ever, a slight interest in asking for the officiality of the Catalan language within the EU. At that stage, the Irish government had shown no interest in doing similarly for the Irish language. This position has surprisingly changed since, but the opposition towards Catalan remains. I think the translation and publication of this editorial is of particular interest in so far as the Irish media have bypassed such criticisms. read full story / add a comment
