Between 1500 and 2000 anti-Bush protestors marched from City Hall to Spanish Arch where they
heard from the new mayor, other City Council members & peace activists saying that Mr. Bush was not welcome in Ireland. Anti-war songs & poems entertined the crowd. A US "corporate flag" (see related link) appeared.

The protest march against the visit of George W. Bush began shortly before 6.30pm. Everyone was reported to be in high spirits. At 7.20 the march arrived near the Lidl supermarket. At 8.10 the front of the march was about three hundred metres walk from the airport. 8.30pm The march was stopped about 200 metres from Shannon Airport by the Gardai at about 8.15pm. There are estimated to be between eight and nine hundred protestors facing a solid wall of Gardai. The protest passed off peacefully, as expected

The results of the Local Elections show that the Bin Tax is still a very real issue. In areas where Anti Bin Tax candidates ran serious campaigns the resulting first preference vote was excellent considering the lack of finance and the voluntary nature of those campaigns. read full story / add a comment

As a result of the first message of support from the South African Anti-War Coalition and the Palestine Solidarity Committee, the Global Women's Strike in Ireland has received further messages of support for the Bush protests from South Africa, Manila, Bangkok, Mumbai and Greece. More will follow from the USA tonight.

The gardaí have announced that the Anti-War Ireland demonstration at Shannon on Friday evening will be allowed to go ahead. However, gardaí have indicated that protestors will be prevented from entering Shannon if they “look like they might cause trouble”. Sinn Féin spokesperson on International Affairs, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, called on people to come out in large numbers to protest against the US Governments brutal occupation of Iraq. The people of Ireland need to send a "powerful message" of opposition to the current policies of the US administration in relation to Iraq, he said.
