Despite the continuation occupation and war, Anti-war activity in Ireland has declined steadily from the strong opposition of 2003/2004. The focus has been blurred and there is no network of activists to support each other and to keep the protests going. read full story / add a comment

A May 31 report in the highly respected Mexican daily La Jornada stated that in late May 2005 Paraguay’s Congress rushed through a law “that will permit United States troops to enter this South American country for 18 months, with immunity for all personnel that participate in activities of training and advising, including civilian personnel.” Paraguay and Bolivia share a border.

Given recent negative US government statements re Bolivia and its social movements – which are demanding complete nationalisation of country’s oil, gas and water – this is an ominous development.

Roddy Connolly (1901 -1980) had a long & varied political career. He was at the side of his father in the GPO in 1916; a few years later he was a founder of the Communist Party of Ireland and a confidant of anti-Treaty republicans; in the 1930s, he was involved in the Republican Congress. Later, he was a Labour TD; later still, he was an obedient pro-coalition chairman of the Labour Party. The lecture will consider Roddy Connolly's career, with a particular focus on his custodianship of the Connolly legacy. read full story / add a comment

Increasing numbers of young American children are showing signs of serious malnourishment, fueled by a greater prevalence of hunger in the United States, while, paradoxically, two-thirds of the US population is either overweight or obese.

Some pediatricians worry that cuts in welfare aid proposed in President George W. Bush's 2006 budget will only exacerbate the situation. By contrast Bush plans to keep tax cuts for more affluent sectors of the population, they note. read full story / add a comment

The term "Least Developed Countries (LDCs)" describes the world's poorest countries with following 3 criteria:

Low-income
- a GDP per capita (under $900 for inclusion, above $1,035 for graduation);

Human resource weakness
- based on indicators of nutrition, health, education, and adult literacy;

Economic vulnerability
- based on indicators of the instability of agricultural production; the instability of exports of goods and services; the economic importance of non-traditional activities (share of manufacturing and modern services in GDP); merchandise export concentration; and the handicap of economic smallness.

Here are the names of 52 of the poorest nations on earth, of which 18 african ones just got debt relief which will become effective over a year and a half. read full story / add a comment

Last summer a postbox near Croke Park was briefly restored to its original Edwardian condition, that is, it was painted bright red. This change was meant to explore some of the undercurrents in the postcolonial nature of Irish society.

As part of the current exhibition at the Digital Hub in Thomas Street, Dublin artist Tadhg McGrath will give a short talk about some of his work, which has included alterations to street furniture and the urban landscape.

To find out what happened to the postbox, come along at 12.45PM. Admission is free. read full story / add a comment
