The collapse of Swedish battery startup Northvolt shows once more that there is no such thing as 'green' industry, says Ben Pile. Industry needs lots of cheap energy ? something that China has and Europe doesn't.

Is the US planning to invade Bolivia?

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Monday June 13, 2005 22:34author by D O Briain Report this post to the editors

A May 31 report in the highly respected Mexican daily La Jornada stated that in late May 2005 Paraguay’s Congress rushed through a law “that will permit United States troops to enter this South American country for 18 months, with immunity for all personnel that participate in activities of training and advising, including civilian personnel.” Paraguay and Bolivia share a border.

Given recent negative US government statements re Bolivia and its social movements – which are demanding complete nationalisation of country’s oil, gas and water – this is an ominous development.

"Paraguay and Bolivia share a border"

Might I humbly suggest you take a closer look at a decent map to understand WHERE Paraguay and Bolivia share a border, what the nature of that area is, how remote from cities or transportation routes in EITHER country, etc.

You might be right of course, but of all the possible ways the US might invade Bolivia somehow I think trying to slog through the Gran Chaco rather ulikely.

I would agree that Paraguay is not a good staging point for the upcoming US invasion of Bolivia. In fact, the invasion will probably involve liberating eastern Bolivia's gas reserves from the grips of the indigenous majority in Bolivia's western highlands. This is what lots of Bolivia's Santa Cruz and Tarija Department inhabitants want themselves. The US should first invade Brazil, taking control of its vast southwestern breadbasket. From there, it could enlist Brazilian slaves (Brazil has never really stopped being a slave state) to annex the eastern lowlands of Bolivia, making it into a vast, gas-rich US protectorate called Mato Gringo Do Oeste. This would also be a prime location for the next US terrorism detainee and interrogation center. The other option would be for the US to level the playing field in Bolivia, literally. With several dozen nuclear bombs, US forces could flatten Bolivia's Altiplano region to match the topography of the eastern lowlands. Finally, people would see eye to eye.
