The story continues...... This time I look at how to resolve paradox, how paradoxical ideas can be used to create propaganda. Fairly long article covering lots of ground, including science, philosophy and politics. A speech by Liz O'Donnell, on neutrality is torn asunder to illustrate propaganda and deceit. And an ideological difference between Fianna Fail and the PD's is finally discovered and discussed. read full story / add a comment

The story continues..... This time the author attempts to prove that any description applied to the possibility of the existence of God, is a man-made one. The overall point of the author is not to disprove the existence of God, but to prove that man is wasting his time, trying to define an aspect of something they equate with 'everything.' read full story / add a comment

The angry worldwide Muslim protests against the publication of cartoons depicting Muhammad in various European newspapers have shown again the enormous anger provoked amongst Muslims by Bush’s “war on terror” and the invasion of Iraq. However the issue that has sparked off these protests and their character has renewed discussion about a war of civilisations or of cultures. These developments are a sharp warning of the divisive tensions can develop in the absence of a strong socialist workers’ movement offering a class alternative. read full story / add a comment

E-mail us and let us know if you can hold a local one. Whatever the case, those going to the Park centre, we will see you there. REINSTATE JOANNE DELANEY – SACKED BY DUNNES FOR WEARING A UNION BADGE Joanne Delaney was sacked by Dunnes stores in November 2005 for wearing her union badge on her uniform. With more than four years service in the Ashleaf store in Crumlin on the south side of Dublin, the 22 year-old MANDATE shop steward received a letter on the 29th of November 2005 informing her that she had been dismissed by the company. Dunnes Stores has accused her of not complying with company policy in relation to the wearing of her union badge on her uniform, despite the fact that there is nothing in the policy about wearing a union badge. Joanne had been suspended by a manager at the store since 18th October for refusing to remove the Mandate Trade Union badge from her uniform. Joanne member was advised to attend a disciplinary meeting at 6.00p.m. on Friday, 21st October . However, the meeting was cancelled due to the fact that she was accompanied by her Union Representative. The Company has continually denied Joanne the right to Union representation at meetings with management. Responding to the dismissal, Mandy Kane, Divisional Organiser of Mandate said “This sacking is petty, vindictive and does the image of Dunnes Stores no favours whatsoever”. Its also pretty much in keeping with the anti-union record of a company that sacked workers who refused to handle goods from South Africa during the Anti-Apartheid Boycott of the mid-eighties. Things we can do to support the re-instatement of Joanne: Support this picket and others or organise a picket outside your local dunnes store Get your union branch to pass a motion in support of Joanne Delaney Send a message to Dunnes Stores management Or alternatively pay a visit to the current management in Dunnes in your local Dunnes store to express your disgust at the action taken by the company and in support of Joanne Delaney. It was recently discovered that the physics department basement in UCC houses nuclear material. That is not necessarily unusual. Hospitals and labs also keep small quantities of radioactive materials even in this country. What is unusual is that UCC has a dismantled nuclear reactor, a small amount of plutonium, and two and a half tonnes of uranium. And they have been there for twenty years read full story / add a comment

US Secretary of Defence, Donald Rumsfeld, recently announced the ‘war on terror’ would be re-named “the long war”; this announcement has not surprised analysts who are aware that neo-con ideologues and strategists follow the Straussian (and perverted Trotskyist) doctrine of permanent war. Some interpret this as nostalgia for the ‘good old days’ of the Cold War in which a clearly defined enemy (communist bogeymen) kept the nation on permanent alert and amenable to the powers of the time. read full story / add a comment
