national / miscellaneous / news report Wednesday March 19, 2003 13:39 by Cathal
I don't think the developments in central-southern-easten europe have been given much attention on the newswire in these hot pre-war times. Towards none, I should say. Which might be a pitty, because an interesting new fault line is designing in that area, between western Europe as a potential development partner falling quickly from favors, and the aggressively self-imposing US, who became suddenly interested in pushing the agenda of NATO integration for countries kept until now at the doors of Europe. read full story / add a comment

Menachem Klein, an Israeli political scientist at Bar Ilan University near Tel Aviv, outlined the logic of Sharon's actions in a recent Christian Science Monitor article (March 13, 2003). "These raids can be a kind of rehearsal, with the idea to arrest someone, but also to see how to get in and out, what tactics to use. A rehearsal on live people. And the thinking is that if the world gets used to these short-term reoccupations, it will digest the long-term one." read full story / add a comment
