the first blanket bombing of a city.

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday March 19, 2003 13:16author by ipsiphi Report this post to the editors

occured today 65 years ago.

A joint Fascist Italy & nationalist fascist coalition of Franco operation. against Barcelona 18th March 1938. The Spanish Civil War fought between the Spanish Republic and a coalition of Fascist and Nationalist groupings led by General Franco saw several 'firsts' in modern warfare.

Guernica the small Basque town had already been dive bombed by Hitler's airforce proving the model for dive bombing since.
Blanket bombing is the indescriminate bombing of cities or land map grid by grid. The first usage of this type of modern warfare lasted three days 65 years ago in Barcelona.
Blanket Bombing was the favoured tactic of RAF planned 'bomber' Harris who applied blanket bombing to most German cities to shorten WW2.

The most notorious example was the bombing of Dresden which lasted several days and culminated in the tarmac on the roads melting and pouring into bombshelters and cellars.

Blanket Bombing is a favoured tactic of the USAF and has been used by them in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq.

All use of blanket bombing includes civilian death, it is a type of warfare that can only be considered criminal.

It is perhaps thus worthy of note that no military planner has ever been brought before a warcrimes tribunal for blanket bombing.

Goering the Air Marshall of NAZI germany significantly did not face charges for blanket bombing at the Nuremburg warcrime trials which followed WW2.

Now the bombs are much "smarter" and so there is less collateral damage ...

What the hell is wrong with you, haven't you been swallowing your daily dose of propaganda tablets ...

There is no such thing as 'smart bombs', over 20 allied soldiers of our own were killed in friendly fire exchange incidents during the recent war in Afghanistan. What does this tell you about smart bombs in the hands of drugged up gung ho pilots.

A 'smart' bomb is only as smart as the idiot who designed it. The Gulf war 1 smart bombs were guided by a laser mounted on the bomber, but only 60% of the bombs actually made guidance contact with the laser when they were dropped.

I agree with my learned colleague's anal-lysis.

Dr. Spin is right, smart bombs are pretty smart and I have news for you whingers: THEY ARE GETTING SMARTER ALL THE TIME ......
Yes sir ! Some of them are already so goddam smart they are even smarter than some humans ....

Just how much spin do we need before we can convince you ?

CONQUER WE MUST FOR OUR CAUSE IT IS JUST ....
Hey, it's in the national anthem so everybody sing along now ....

Gallimhed, don't you see that is why these wars are necessary ... we have to test out our new weapons to improve their accuracy so that even more precise targeting is possible next time round ... that way there is less collateral damage and less need for expenditure on public relations ... have you any idea how much those guys charge ?

60% is not so bad for a first deployment ....
Hey c'mon nobody's perfect ....

The british and irish public desperately need this war, to distract from revelations from Operation Ore, economic collapse, not to mention our fat cat multinationals corporations and big buisness relocating their factories to the sweat shops of the third world. Pioneer Jo Moore led the way by leaking bad news during the 9/11 disaster, knowing that it would not be noticed much, covered by the avalanche of 9/11 disaster reporting. This war is another great opportunity to release potentially damaging news about our governments activities and information such as Operation Ore findings, tucked in admist the full blown daily war correspondents, whose going to notice such news.

My war is everywhere there is inhumanity, injustice, inequality and poverty. That is why I go to colombia to witness the FARC, to the slums, shanty towns of Rio de janeiro, where children rummage through discarded waste for scraps of food, in the dirt track tin shack towns of Africa, where again children and babies of the poor, live and sleep on the streets, begging for crumbs, trawling through infested rubbish for scraps of leftover food. These are my people the poor of the world, of every colour, shade and religion.
