Yesterday, in Jerusalem the appeal of Mordechai Vanunu against the restrictions imposed on him by the State of Israel came before the Supreme Court. After his release from 18 years of imprisonment in April 2004, Vanunu was not truly free..The restrictions imposed by the State, among other things, denied him the right to freedom of speech and freedom of movement. These restrictions are in breach of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Yesterday, 6 September, was another day for Mordechai's appeal in court. read full story / add a comment

John Donovan, a long term shareholder and critic of Royal Dutch Shell Plc management, provides an overview of a board room culture which has allowed a series of scandals to damage Shell’s once proud reputation. A culture where directors have been prepared to cook the books and have whistleblowers (Dr John Huong) and campaigners (the “Rossport Five”), terrorised and thrown in jail. Shell's reputation has been ruined due to the rapacious greed, arrogance and aggressive tactics of some Shell executives.

The management of Royal Dutch Shell has more than met its match in the current no-holds-barred "negotiation" with the Kremlin over potential profits from the $20 billion Sakhalin II project in Russia. Little interest is being paid however by either party to the fate of the endangered Whale population. read full story / add a comment

Nobody really knows how many people have died in Darfur over the last few years - certainly the number is in 100,000's.
The end of this month the AU, African Union forces will withdraw and the Sudanese government promise it will replace them with its own troops - the same troops who have bombed and strafed and murdered their way through the region already - this time of course with a former rebel group who recently turned on their comrades to get concessions from Al-Bashir's regime. read full story / add a comment

A report by Israel’s National Insurance Institute shows that another 100,000 people fell below the poverty line in Israel bringing the total impoverished to 1.6m or 24.7% of the population. The report also indicated that Israel at 35% had the highest child poverty rate amongst capitalist countries. Much of this has been caused by various cutbacks in social spending from previous military adventures with further cuts planned as a result of the most recent war in Lebanon. Unemployment is also running at 9%. read full story / add a comment

A LOCAL authority has come under fire after revelations it sold a prime development site in a thriving town centre for just €100. Leitrim County Council last week defended its decision to sell the town centre car park, which is estimated at being worth tens of thousands of euros. The land on Church Lane just off the Main Street in Manorhamilton was sold to the Manorhamilton Enterprise Forum Ltd, a voluntary group comprising of local businessmen. They have since sold it on to developers for an undisclosed "slight" profit who are in the process of building a major residential and commercial development on the site. The development was unsuccessfully appealed by a number of local residents to An Bord Pleanala in April and involved a petitions signed by Hundreds of local people. It has further emerged this week that the County Council have agreed to purchase back some of the development for €900,000. read full story / add a comment
