The Politics of Privatisation

Speaker: KIERAN ALLEN
(Author: The Celtic Tiger: The Myth of Social Partnership)

Red Parrot, Dorset St
Monday 31st January
8pm

The government has suggested privatizing the ESB even though the experience in California has shown that privatization leads to black outs and dearer prices.
A present it is trying to impose bin charges Dublin. Once they get through it will lead to privatisation – and the removal of the waiver system.
Everywhere the same arguments are used to justify privatization. It is supposed to lead to more efficiency. It is supposed to be better for the customer.
At this meeting, Kieran Allen looks at the experience of privatization internationally and argues that the opposite is the case.
Privatization leads to a worse service, under-investment in vital resources, corruption and super-profits. read full story / add a comment

Many people will now be aware that Padraigin Drinan, the committed human rights lawyer is being shut down by the Law Society.
A campaign has now been launched by some of us who are deeply deeply concerned about the actions of the Law Society. We aim to pull together those who are clients of the office and those who have worked with Padraigin over the years and more importantly those who are committed to the same rights and freedoms and principles that Padraigin has been defending for the last thirty odd years.
This decisision to close Padraigin's office is a disgrace and an indictment of a cowardly, vindictive body who have long had the knife out for the human rights solicitor. read full story / add a comment

The statement below has been produced for distribution at the World Social Forum, Brazil highlighting a campaign organised by Joe Higgins TD, Socialismo Revolucionario (CWI - Brazil) and the CWI against the recent threat to evict Kaiowa Indians from Cerro Marangatu.

When Joe Higgins arrived in Brazil to visit this landless community, he immediately contacted the Irish Foreign Minister and he protested to the Brazilian embassy in Dublin. This pressure along with letters of protest to many Brazilian embassies internationally has obviously had an effect on the Lula administration. Representatives of the local authorities in Mato Grosso do Sul informed Joe that government officials in Brazilia have contacted them demanding information on the case. read full story / add a comment

Sky , over the time the 'Irishheads' (who would later establish the IMC here) got to know him in Genoa for the Anti G8 protests, became our new best friend. I can remember it like it was yesterday sitting at the cafe beside the Genoa IMC being ranted at by Sky about why ireland needed an Indymedia Site yesterday. I remember him going around in his raver necklace in the Centre on the Sunday of the protests chilling others out even though he knew big trouble was coming our way. He ended up in a coma in Hospital and We never saw him in the flesh again. The Daily mail slandered and scapegoated him in the worst way possible and this Guardian Article (Cut and pasted as site requires registration) tells the whole story in a fair way. Fuck the man from the Daily Mail and good on Sky for Harrasing them and standing up for his rights. read full story / add a comment
