In an attempt to keep the momentum going on this campaign, Craigavon Trades Council held another public meeting in Lurgan last night (12th Sept) Difficulties in advertising the event contributed to another disappointing turn out. However using the maxim of quality over quantity the meeting was a possitive one. The launch of the water charge petition in the area has been a great success. So much so the Trades Council has been encouraged to organise further signing days in the major towns in the forthcoming weeks. It is vitally important that the postponement of the charges for a year does not bring about a false sense of security on this matter. There is still a massive job to be done, needing the focused attention of all the groups opposing this unfair double tax. There is another meeting in Portadown Town Hall wednesday 14th September at 7.30. Other meetings and events will be advertised in due course. read full story / add a comment

A sample selection of images from the exhibition, 'Images of Resistance' are enjoying widespread viewership (is there such a word?) in two cafes based in the 'Italian Centre', Dublin. The centre is beside the Millenium Bridge (next to the Halfpenny Bridge), it's the buildings built by Mick Wallace's workers. You may remember the sites being draped by huge canopies bearing different slogans during there construction, 'capitalism means war' being one. Mick ruffled a lot of feathers and won. The sale of the prints will help finance the exhibition and one or more of the photographers to travel to different locations. Some posters of the exhibition are still available at only €1 each. Lots a great food at reasonable prices too! Any enquiries to myself at the above e-mail address. read full story / add a comment

The US Count Votes project's most recent statistical analysis presents a thorough scientific rebuttal of Edison/Mitofsky´s proposed explanation for the discrepancy between last November's exit poll figures, which predicted a win for Kerry with a margin of 3%, and final vote tallies, which gave Bush the victory with a margin of 2.5%. According to the statisticians who have authored this latest analysis of the exit poll and vote tally data, Edison/Mitofsky's explanation just does not hold water. The hypothesis that the discrepancy was due to vote miscounting persists. read full story / add a comment

On Monday 12 September, the Danish defence intelligence whistleblower Frank Grevil commences an appeal against the six-month prison sentence he was given last November as a penalty for leaking confidential threat assessments about Iraq to the Danish daily Berlingske Tidende the previous February. The leak undermined confidence in the Danish government’s decision to participate in the invasion of Iraq on the basis of the alleged threat of weapons of mass destruction. Meanwhile, Grevil’s former employer will press for a new prosecution for further offences allegedly committed in a book about Grevil that has just been published. read full story / add a comment

From bad to worse is the new sub-text slogan for Bush and his administration. Appearing on US media, flanked by Cheney, Rumsfeld and numerous other (wooden) neo-cons, Bush repeated his rehearsed lines – “we are problem solvers”. This statement met with numerous reporters clearing their throats; the problem is Bush and his inept administration. The emperor is not only without clothes but is also devoid of ability. The corporate driven Bush government is learning that managing a nation has little in common with running an oil company. [Those best suited for government are dedicated to the selfless service of others – a concept totally alien to conservative ideology.] read full story / add a comment

"So we grabbed my Canon digital rebel and my Sony videocamera and started walking down the street," Marble wrote. "And then right in front of the destroyed tennis court I used to play on Dick Cheney was giving a pep rally, talking to the press. The Secret Service guys patted us down and waved the wands over us, and then let us pass." As he stood about 10 feet away from Cheney and his friend and some camera operators from CNN and other media filmed the scene, Marble suddenly yelled, "Go fuck yourself, Mr. Cheney! Go fuck yourself, you asshole!" read full story / add a comment |
