Workers at the National Aquatic Centre have served notice of industrial action, it was revealed this afternoon.
The latest development stems from a dispute between the company which runs the centre, Dublin Waterworld, and SIPTU. The company has refused to recognise SIPTU union membership.

The union has claimed that four people were wrongfully dismissed from the company, including three of its members.

The action will take the form of a ban on overtime, a work to rule and unannounced short work stoppages.

The Tom Johnson summer school - the annual summer school of the Labour Party took place during the weekend in Kilkenny. This year the Jim Kemmy award was given to the community in Rossport and Erris and was accepted by Vincent McGrath of the Rossport Five. The Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte T.D. presented the award. Past recipients of the award have included Rosanna Flynn of Residents against Racism and pro choice anti racist and community activist Cathleen O Neil. The award in memory of Jim Kemmy is given to people who courageously campaign and stand up for left wing political values.

Vincent Mc Grath and the Rossport community were presented with an original and rare edition of Michael Davitts prison notes to symbolise the connection between Davitt and the current struggle of the people of Erris - both have fought for the rights of Irish people to own their land.

Supporters of the Shell to Sea campaign have decided not to mount a protest at today’s meeting in Westport of the Fianna Fail parliamentary party. To do so would have been to confer unwarranted attention and respect to the gathering. This is particularly the case when it appears that despite being in Mayo no Fianna Fail minister will visit North Mayo nor have any asked to be briefed on the situation there by the Shell to Sea campaign and local people. Given the ongoing seriousness of the Corrib gas conflict, its effects on the people of Erris and that energy is a
theme of the meeting, this failure by Fianna Fail is all the more glaring. read full story / add a comment

Mr Justice Dermot Kinlen is not only a judger but also our splendid Irish republic's Inspector of Prisons.
He is thus one of the few chaps who not only bangs people up but goes & has a look at them later. A pillar of the establishment.

For those in the loop of Irish civil, human & other rights this last year, the recommendation by Dermot Kinlen to allow inmates in Ireland's penal community conjugal visits & rights was seen as sort of a promising thing read full story / add a comment

Professional sexual services for the disabled are well established in several EU states including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark & Sweden. Their development as part of a long-term full recovery strategy & therapy for adults who had lost mobility due to accidents soon expanded to addressing questions of "how do parents of disabled children be that disability mental or physical facilitate full sexual development & maturity?"
The UK first saw co-habitation of young adults with Downes Syndrome with minimal input by either parents or social services in the early 90's. And now the Swiss group "FABS" has started the ball rolling in the Alpine country to provide a "full service" which goes beyond "erotic touching" to full sexual intercourse. read full story / add a comment

Aoibheann McNamara, proprietor of the Ard Bia restaurant in Quay Street and Seamus Sheridan, head honcho of Sheridan's Cheesemongers in Church Yard Street organised a collection today at the farmers’ market in Church Yard St in order to assist the beleaguered Lebanese who run the slow food market in Beirut - the moneys raised will be divided among the various families struggling to survive in their city and country viciously wasted by the Israelis.

Judging from the evidence of my eyes the collection was handsome. read full story / add a comment

The Rossport Solidarity Camp will not be taken down this winter. It's up to stay. In fact, work is under way to improve the camp infrastructure and make it stronger ... strong enough to face the oncoming winter on one of the most exposed and windswept coasts in Europe.

For those of us who are unable to make the sort of sacrifice that those who live and work on the camp have made, this meeting is an opportunity for us to discuss, plan and organise ways in which we can support them from home. It's not just a meeting for Clare people - if you feel you have something to offer, please come no matter where you are or where you're heading. read full story / add a comment
Direct Action Against Drax
international / environment / opinion/analysis Friday September 01, 2006 18:24 by watchman   text 6 comments (last - saturday september 02, 2006 21:06)   image 1 image
Members of the British SWP have surprisingly come out in support of yesterdays direct action to shut down the "Drax" coal power station in England. The action was the culmination of a week of environmental workshops held on a squatted common under heavy police surveillance with around 600 people attending. The SWP of course had nothing to do with the camp or the action but it seems they may be looking to hijack the growing libertarian-environmental movement in the UK. The support for this action and the raytheon action show how the SWP, who are currently desperate for membership after seriously discrediting themselves several times over the past few years with GR, IAWM and Mayday04, are contradicting their long running opposition to direct action. read full story / add a comment

Vincent Paquette & Mario Beauregard are tippy toppy scientists based in Canada who have built their reputation scanning happy brains. Meaning, they have paid their mortage, put their kids through school, gone on holidays & generally got on with it all thanks to ample government & some small corporate funding. During which they've selected small groups of "happy individuals" & put them through brain scans to discover what really kicks that happiness switch".

Having had wonderful results on their neural scans of men at orgasm they have now recruited no less than 15 Carmelite nuns (who belong to the order founded by the very happy Teresa in today's illustration) to go through functional magnetic resonance whislt they remember the most intense..... read full story / add a comment
