Left-wing activists in Britain are less likely to work with their political opponents and more likely to think that those who think differently have been misled, a study has found. Leftists are intolerant? Who knew.

Making the European Union Relevant for Women (September 20 Athlone)

Regional Conference for the Midlands organised by the National Forum On Europe with the help of community (women's) groups.

WHERE: Radisson Hotel Athlone
WHEN: SWednesday, 20 September 2006 (10am - 4pm / Lunch Included)
TARGET GROUP: Women living in the Midlands
COST: None (Travel expenses and childcare costs will be reimbursed)

Decisions taken in the EU affect people living in the Midlands as much as anywhere else. This conference is to clarify what the European Union actually does with regards to issues that are of concern to women living in the Irish Midlands.

The conference is being organised by the National Forum On Europe with the help of community (women's) groups in the region. The National Forum On Europe has promoted debate on the European Union since 2001. This time the National Forum On Europe wants to get women involved more fully. You are invited to attend and to articulate your views to Members of the Forum.

The conference will open with a general information presentation on the EU's policies and actions that are relevant to women's lives. Then participants will break into the workshops. Information and discussion here will focus on themes already decided by local groups at a preparatory meeting in the Midlands:

• Understanding the EU's role: Women and Poverty
• Understanding the EU's role: Women and Employment
• The EU's role in promoting Women's Human Rights
• Understanding the EU's role: Education and Training for Women
• Women in Power and Decision-Making
• Understanding the EU's role: Women and Rural Development

After lunch, the issues debated in the workshops will be reported back to Forum Members (politicians) and Members of the Special Observer Pillar (civil society organisations). A dialogue will follow.

This will be an opportunity to raise awareness among politicians of issues relevant to women in the Midlands and to feed women's concerns in the debate on the European Union.

The deadline for registration is 11 September 2006.
Places are limited.

Booking form and details about the various workshops can be obtained from Cora Pfafferott at the Forum's Secretariat, National Forum On Europe,
State Apartments, Dublin Castle,
