Tracking Beacon (NY12508) A new video by Peter O'Kennedy Showing May 16 – June 12, St.Stephen's Green. Opening Thursday May 15th 6-9 pm An abandoned railway track runs through the town of Beacon, in upstate New York. A miniature camera mounted on a small machine built to ride the track records a long, extreme close-up tracking shot of one of the rails as it enters, passes through, and leaves the town. As the machine carries the camera along the track (as the track tracks itself), the sun sets and the piece ends in darkness. read full story / add a comment

If you were walking the streets of Paris this month 40 years ago, chances are you would be completely caught up and participating in a time that has since changed French society forever. Then, France was on the verge of a total revolt with 12 million workers on strike, 122 factories occupied, and millions of students fighting for a radical change in the way the world was working. A spark that boldly called for revolution and dreamed of an end to capitalism appeared to come out of nowhere. Its ripples sparked further questioning and action in other parts of the world including our own little island. Ultimately, Paris ’68 did not succeed, but that’s not to say that the spark has been fully quelled or, indeed, that it wont boldly appear again in what are still troubled times. read full story / add a comment

A claim by the Labour Party that the No Campaign have misrepresented the position of the European Trade Union Council (ETUC) is entirely false and a distortion of fact. In a statement issue today by Eamon Gilmore TD, the Labour Leader claims that attempts have been made by “Irish opponents of the Treaty to misrepresent the position of the ETUC…” However, People Before Profit Alliance have today confirmed that the in fact the ETUC have indeed called for a social progress clause to be added to the Lisbon Treaty. In correspondence with the People Before Profit Alliance in recent weeks, the ETUC confirmed that the ETUC had “asked for a social clause and that our affiliates are aware of it.” read full story / add a comment

He has been noted for his fiery oratory skills and innovative protest tactics like the ‘flying pickets’. This morning in Castlebar, the judge in the case involving three local fishermen who were appealing against prison sentences imposed on them, suddenly announced that he was excusing himself from making a judgment. Judge Rory McCabe told the court that he has a personal conflict in dealing with the case and would not be able to hear it. He declined to say what the nature of this conflict is. He said he would try to make alternative arrangements for another judge to hear the case later this week. The judge in the original case, Mary Devins has been criticised because she insists she has no conflict in hearing case relating to the government backed-Shell scheme even though she is married to a Fianna Fail minister, Jimmy Devins. read full story / add a comment
