The weekend just passed was the final one at Lower Ormond Quay for the Seomra Spraoi social centre. Farewell events included an acoustic gig on Friday evening, a children's craft day on Saturday and a party on Saturday night. As the dust recedes from the ballot box and the parties alternately lick their wounds and rest on their laurels it’s worth having a think about its consequences for the left in general and the radical left in particular...Sinking a lot of work into achieving an especially high soapbox isn’t that much use when people aren’t listening, if we want our arguments to be heard we need to make them from the furnace where our politics have been forged, the heart of the struggles of the people. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday Sunday 27th of May voters in the Spanish state were called to elect their councils, municipal governments and in 13 of the 17 autonomous regions to elect their regional administrations.
As such the results which became available last night offer a clear indication for the political future in key areas such as the Basque and Navarra, the cities of Barcelona and Madrid & of course the hopes the Zapatero administration have for winning the next general election. read full story / add a comment

Today I attended a solidarity vigil for Gary MacLennan outside his QUT (Queensland University of Technology) disciplinary hearing. Gary and a fellow QUT academic John Hookam, are facing disciplinary hearings and possible dismissals, for objecting to a PhD project entitled "Laughing at the Disabled".
