For those who have not been to a computer fair before, a computer fair is no different from any other market in that it is composed of stalls run by various vendors. Each vendor pays a small fee for the space they occupy and uses it to display and sell their goods. The sale that takes place is a transaction between the vendor and the customer and has nothing to do with the organizer of the fair. read full story / add a comment

Throughout the world, public services have been under attack for the past twenty years. Forming a central plank of the capitalist globalisation agenda, ‘privatisation’ and ‘competition’ are the seemingly unchallenged dogma of modern capitalism. The levels of privatisation which have taken place worldwide are absolutely mindblowing. During the 1990s alone over $900billion worth of public assets were transferred into private hands. Globally this agenda is pushed by the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The basic theory by which these bodies operate is that all decisions should be made on the basis of profitability alone. read full story / add a comment

At the High Court on Monday 31st July, members of Bantry Concerned Action Group were about to issue proceedings under section 160 of the Planning Act against the ESB, arguing that the powerline proposed in Bantry is currently an unauthorised development. The proceedings were providing a welcome respite for protesters to so far have successfully blocked the ESB from continuing work along the route of the powerline. Farmers along the route assisted by members from the Solidarity Camp had successfully blocked numerous efforts by the ESB to off-load poles, bring diggers on-site etc. The exercise, according to the ESB, cost them €15,000 each day, with virtually no results for all their efforts. At time of writing, all machinery and equipment has been removed from the area. read full story / add a comment

Over 300 farmers from as far apart as Malin Head in Donegal and Wexford assembled for a rally in Bantry to support over twenty local farmers preventing the ESB from laying an overhead powerline across their lands. After the rally, the group marched through Bantry, stopping for a while outside a hotel being constructed by Murnane and O'Shea, the businessmen behind the windfarm project who are demanding that overhead powerlines cross 40 farms over a 14km route read full story / add a comment

Farmers in Bantry have were astonished to find a letter in the planning office from Mary Coughlan, Minister for Agriculture making representations on behalf of Bob Murnane who is currently seeking planning permission to extend the size of a controversial windfarm near Bantry. The Ballybane windfarm being developed by local businessmen Murnane and O’Shea requires a grid connection to a sub-station 14 kilometres away. Over twenty farmers along the route have been blockading the ESB to prevent them from constructing overhead powerlines. read full story / add a comment
