This years Feile Bride Conference was held on Saturday 28th January, in Kildare town. Hosted by Afri in association with Cairde Bride and Frontline; this years focus was on Human Rights.
The conference started with a meeting in the Town Square (where we met up with protestors demanding the release of Percy Podger, a jailed Kildare Sheep farmer). The Brigid Flame was brought from the square to the meeting hall where it was given pride of place in the centre of the stage.

A great protest took place outside Dunnes on Georges Street on Thursday evening in support of Joanne Delaney who was sacked for wearing a union pin. Over thirty activists from trade unions, labour youth, workers solidarity movement, street seen and the wider labour movement joined Joanne Delaney. Two Labour councillors including Eric Byrne who is tabling a motion in support of Joanne at Dublin City Council attended the protest.

Dunnes security and management looked somewhat disturbed when a passing group of young French socialists began singing the internationale in solidarity with Joanne. read full story / add a comment

This story began (for some) on the 30th of Sept. 2005 when a Danish newspaper published a series of cartoons depicting Muhummad PBUH the prophet of Islam.

For others this story began on the 14th of February 1989 when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini then supreme leader of Iran issued a "fatwa" calling for the execution of Salman Rushdie on Tehran radio.

& for yet others more, this story began with the Quran and that no visual images or depictions of God exist because such artistic depictions may lead to idolatry and are thus disdained. A similar position in Christian theology is termed iconoclasm. Moreover, most Muslims believe that God is incorporeal, making any two- or three- dimensional depictions impossible. This prohibition is extended to the prophets of God. (peace be upon them).

Is there a 'European' journalistic culture? Are there values and practices that reflect a specifically European sense of identity or common purpose? Is there a pattern to the way in which 'European' issues are dealt with in the media? To what extent have questions of ownership and technology had an influence? Just some of the questions to be raised at a plenary session of the National Forum On Europe in Farmleigh read full story / add a comment
