"I believe that spies, the security services, in the world generally, are becoming increasingly powerful and that our civil liberties are being eroded." Justin Keating. This article is an attempt to put flesh on those bones. I attempt to list some of those agencies active in Ireland, to list some of the powers they can and do use to make life difficult for those that cross them and to look at some of the technology they have access to. I put in two appendices too that hopefully show the controlling role of those agencies in Irish paramilitary groups and some international comparisons to this type of intelligence agency support for 'terrorist' groups that they are ostensibly opposing. An Orwellian island in an Orwellian world! read full story / add a comment

Carcavelos beach is just outside of Lisbon the capital of Portugal, where the EU deal on good times for poor people was made. Yesterday during the national holiday, Carcavelos beach filled up with happy Lisbonites relaxing from the worst inflation in the EU, and probably rubbing shoulders with the cheery types who fly in from the north and buy flats in the picturesque city to recover from the strain of being on the pigs back. This is modern tourism. read full story / add a comment ![]()

For the last 48 hours, the situation in Manila, Philippines has worsened... Campesinos in their thousands have marched to the presidential palace demanding that the president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo resign (she was elected in may 2004). They have been water cannon-ed by the police and many are injured. They have not left the city. There have been reports of a "coup d'etat" in the last week, which set against a history of over 20 military interventions, merely signals that certain military officers are "taking an interest". Today's national day is thought tosee tensions peak. This follows consistent allegations of c-o-r-r-u-p-t-i-o-n, which have at all levels dogged the Pacific republic, made up of 7000 islands and counting on a population of roughly 85 million. read full story / add a comment ![]()

2nd day of a strike against Mugabe in Zimbabwe sees people up north claim he's finally gone bonkers. *finally*? Oh dear, Mugabe has been around as long as any other 80+year old leader, he's up there with paisley and fraga. you can't teach old dogs new tricks & generally everyone has their own nichname for them. You could learn a lot by comparing and contrasting them, their pals and foes indeed. Mugabe has knocked down houses all over the shop, you know that, but his reasons are very very Western capitalist, he's combatting the "informal sector", these people were fueling the black market, living in non-council approved houses, you'd never get that in ireland... read full story / add a comment

There are currently 2 Scania lorries carrying lengths of pipeline for Shell attempting to access farmers' land. They are being held by a van and about 13 local people. There is also one Gard present at the scene. The standoff has been going on since 6pm when local farmer Willie Corduff witnessed the lorries attempting to access (his)? land. This is the time to act folks. If you were up in Mayo at the weekend you'll know why. we HAVE to support these people. If you can get up there consider going. Perhaps we need a permanent activist presence there. If you can't get there do something in your own area. look for Shell offices, govt. offices, Statoil are part of the consortium too. We need a huge noise now to let these invaders know that they can't get away with this kind of shit. read full story / add a comment

![]() ![]() Not so long ago on Indymedia Maura Harrington, a local campaigner implored people to come down to the solidarity gathering in Rossport against the construction of pipe line through the area. She said that “once you see the area you will agree with us that it is not the place for a gas refinery and an unprecedented high pressure up stream pipeline.” How right she was. Last weekend over two hundred people traveled to the back arse of Mayo to take part in a Reclaim The Beach celebration of resistance to Shell in the area and to attend workshops on Shell’s brutality in Nigeria, engage in walking tours of the area led by local campaigners and enter into a dialogue on how best to advance the campaign. read full story / add a comment ![]()
