Sharing the platform with Minister Treacy was Socialist Party TD, Joe Higgins, who said that to talk now about the ins and outs of the Constitution was like "polishing the silverware on the Titanic after the iceberg had struck". He believed that the rejection of the Constitution by the electorates of France and the Netherlands had dealt it a fatal blow. "The Dutch and French working classes have rejected the system whereby multinationals and the business elites dictate the policies of the EU", he said.

Deputy Higgins also dismissed criticisms that people had voted on domestic issues instead of on the Constitution itself. "What's wrong with voting on domestic concerns? Is the Constitution so removed from day-to-day issues?" he asked. He claimed that voters were concerned about employers exploiting immigrant labour for their own profits, rather than paying everyone a decent wage.
