Casual holiday-season surfers of international news/diplomatic temperature indicators will of course have noticed the Arctic & its potential exploitation are on the agenda. Naturally it's not presented in a cool, sexy, ice-cream way, nor for the moment in horrible cub-clubbing whale slaughtering dirtiness - but the nugget cold war seems for the moment to have left Dharfur, Dead Spies, Tehran's nukes & the mostly French Clearstream scandal's trillion dollar graft behind. It is almost as if we are all wishing on the falling stars & meteorite showers the Perseids which annually offer us a bit of make-believe. There is of course an Irish as well as Southern European dimension to what is being presently spun varyingly as the "Arctic cold war" or "Rush to claim Arctic hydrocarbons". Because to be quite honest all this "divying up the Arctic" has been on the cards (or runestones) for a long time now, I thought to bring you through it. read full story / add a comment ![]()

In today's issue of the Observer, Peter Beaumont in Baghdad reports that the US occupation army is enervated, all petered and in crisis: "Exhaustion and combat stress are besieging US troops in Iraq as they battle with a new type of warfare. Some even rely on Red Bull to get through the day. As desertions and absences increase, the military is struggling to cope with the crisis". read full story / add a comment ![]()

Even the most casual of Irish news cyber-surfer will have caught yet another one of those photo-opportunities of First minister minister doctor right honourable Ian the big mon Paisley of little Ulster stroking the tail-fin of an Aer Lingus model plane this week. He was chuffed because his new government had just managed to strip Shannon airport of all its remaining christian traffic & good travellers & convince Aer Lingus to reschedule its Heathrow flights from Shannon to Belfast. Oh well that has brought ecumenical flavour and colaboration to the Sunday Homily and Sermon circuit of Ireland. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Brendan O'Donnell died in the central mental hospital a young man (~ 23) about 10 years ago. Whatever happened him the event set alarm bells ringing in my mind. Is it too late now (or too soon?) to seek a transparent public account of his death and how it came about? He was a triple murderer, physically strong and, as far as I know, suicide was not a factor. read full story / add a comment

Tony Wilson had a heart attack this week & after suffering prolonged illness died comfortably yesterday in Manchester. He was a hoot. He played records, he did telly, he started record companies, he made glitzy crap, he started the Hacienda club, he play his part in so many roles. Most of them of such importance to our contemporary culture and media that at first it's just too easy to think he had the long difficult death coming and it doesn't matter if people don't make or do that sort of music or telly or if Manchester still isn't free. He was 57 years of age. It is highly unlikely that such an entrepeneurial professional gobshite will ever arrive on the scene with such ironic affability. May he rest in peace. read full story / add a comment ![]()

In a story from the Moscow News today, the deputy head of Russia's environmental agency denied that Shell had tried to bribe him by offering him fifty million dollars. He wanted to state clearly that he couldn't say for sure that it was Shell, only that "someone" had tried to arrange a meeting with him in Switzerland to discuss the possibility of suspending enviromental checks on the Sakhalin project. No actual amount of money was mentioned either. So that's clear then. It all brings to mind our own Frank Fahy, a former teacher who has managed to amass a huge property portfolio. Didn't Frank have some Moscow links of his own at one stage? see also www.indymedia.ie/article/76360 read full story / add a comment ![]()
