It is scarcely enough to make a gesture towards mental patients and the mentally ill on one day of the year only. However, to mark World Mental Health Day (10 October 2007) I am posting an article which I wrote quite a few weeks ago to suggest to indymedia readers the extent of real globalisation in establishment efforts to overcome the problem of mental illness. However, as with globalisation in other areas, the question arises of how far we are on the right track? read full story / add a comment

RTÉ has announced a programme in its Hidden History series making controversial claims about IRA sectarianism during the War of independence. This is how RTE is currently publicising it: Guns and Neighbours: The Killings at Coolacrease “The bloody tale of a bitter land dispute, involving a family of Protestant farmers in County Offaly, which comes to a deadly conclusion during the War of Independence. Featuring interviews with descendants of the men who carried out the killings, this portrait of a forgotten atrocity features substantial newspaper archive research, IRA witness statements and military documents from the period.” read full story / add a comment

this started as a letter to my philosophy lecturers expressing my disatisfaction about the passiveness of acadmic philosophy. Then i got carried away and started to spew my frustrations about youth orientated consumerism. I never hear this subject, that i believe is the root to most of the flaws in society today, debated in the media. I sent it to the major newspapers but got no response. Maybe some of you could give me your views. read full story / add a comment

It's a cliché that the media was the first casualty of the Iraqi occupation, but few reacted like Dahr Jamail. Made brazen by his travels off the beaten path between monotonous jobs, he packed a cheap digital camera along with a laptop and entered Iraq to go beyond the Green Zone and embedded reporting.
The dispatches he circulated online, first through emails and then through his site, quickly grew into an essential resource for those in the west desperate for an alternative take on the war on terror. They remain today a vital channel for struggling voices inside occupied Iraq.
A collection of Dahr's work called Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches From an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq is coming out this month on Haymarket Books, prior to its release he sat down with Indymedia Ireland to talk about his journalism and the situation in Iraq. read full story / add a comment

The Iranian Junta attempted to use the daughter and son of Che to whip up support for the Islamists and to do down Socialism. This backfired spectacularly when Aleida Guevara made it clear that Che was a Communist and an Atheist. An attempt to rope in the son and daughter of the Argentine revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara to forge a parallel between Iran’s Islamist revolution and the socialist revolution in Latin America through a four-day conference has ended in fiasco. After Aleida Guevara protested from the podium against perceived distortions of her father’s ideology by the first Iranian speaker, Haj Saeed Ghasemi, the four-day ‘Che Like Chamran’ conference, that started Sep. 25, was aborted and the Latin American guests whisked away. read full story / add a comment

Last week the out of the way website "Damn Data" picked up on the latest buzz amongst those for whom fear of hermetic or allegorical secret societies on the Western model has waned in recent years perhaps due to unsurmountable silliness or maybe just solving all the secrets. For in truth not even 911 or the current legal attemps by Mohamed Fayed to bring Philip Mountabatten to an unlawful death verdict relating to the death of his (fayed who prefers to be known as alFayed) son's lover Diance Spencer [who was the ex-wife of course of Mountabatten's son (who prefers to be known as the prince of Cymru & Wales)] can really get us SEEING THE TRUTH read full story / add a comment
