In addition to incinerators at Ringaskiddy, the a toxic dump at Haulbowline and a long list of other indignities Cork Harbour is suffering it is now under attack from another direction. The state body responsible for electricity distribution since 2006, Eirgrid are going ahead with plans to install a submarine power cable between Aghada and Cuskinny Bay. Cork Harbour's motto “a safe harbour for all” is quite laughable for the marine life and the flora and fauna of the area who seem to be excluded from this pledge. read full story / add a comment ![]()
"Foreigner" reports : Israel's immigration police cracks down on pro-Palestinian foreigners(Haaretz)

Israel's Haaretz newspaper is reporting that: Israel's new immigration police has joined security forces in cracking down on foreign activists residing in the Palestinian West Bank ... The Oz Unit participated last week in the attempted arrest of a number of activists in the West Bank town of Bil'in, and also in the raid that nabbed leading Palestinian militants Mohammed Hatib that same night. Two weeks ago, the unit took part in the arrest of a Czech activist in Ramallah. A fact I can attest to as I was one of the "foreigners" and videoographer of the night's brutal proceedings in Bil'in before I had to exit the West Bank at the weekend. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Pat Kenny has lost the plot on Climate Change. As has been noted on previous Indymedia articles Pat Kenny's position on the coming climate catastrophe is “It's all been blown out of proportion.” But could he be right? Maybe the whole thing is a storm in a teacup. I certainly hope he's right. But let's take one example... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Auschwitz survivor, Hajo Meyer, used a speech to encourage support for the international campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Approximately 100 people attended the meeting in The Grosvenor Hall, Belfast on Friday 29 January 2009. During his speech, Meyer condemned the misuse of the holocaust for political purposes and compared Israel's treatment of Palestinians today to Nazi treatment of Jews before and during the second world war. The meeting, to be repeated in Dublin on Saturday 30 January, concludes a month-long series of events organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign to mark the first anniversary of Israel's invasion of Gaza in December 2008. Prior to arriving in Ireland, Meyer had spent the previous week on a speaking tour in Scotland and England organised by the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network. In February, Meyer is to continue his speaking tour in France, Austria and Germany. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Just over a month ago in Copenhagen’s free town of Cristiania there were firey words spoken, followed by baracades of fire, conflict with riot police and mass arrests of cliamte justice activists. The talk, with Noami Klein and others, led to the later arrest of Tadzio Muller for “instigating a riot” under the new Danish “anti terrorist laws“. The talk was our “party night”, December 14th 2009, 2 days before the RECLAIM POWER demo… PUSHING FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE Below is the video compilation of that important talk, what happened after and what that has led to. Reclaim Power was not an end in itself, it was only that hugely difficult and important first step… read full story / add a comment ![]()

The report launched today is the result of an investigation into the reality of abortion in Ireland, which was carried out in 2009. The report examines the real effects of Ireland's restrictive and often unclear abortion laws on women in crisis pregnancy and highlights the increased burdens placed on women forced to leave the state to access medical care. Commenting, Spokesperson Sinead Ahern said “In the 27 years since the 8th amendment we have criminalised and stigmatised women in crisis. We have not stopped abortion happening; we have simply driven it abroad or underground. It is time that we discuss the issue of abortion in Ireland in terms of the reality and not geography. Although the women visit foreign clinics we still have a duty of care to them”. read full story / add a comment ![]()
