“Office Of The High Commissioner Of Human Rights The right to adequate housing (Art.11 (1)) : . 12/13/1991. CESCR General comment 4. (General Comments) Habitability. Adequate housing must be habitable, in terms of providing the inhabitants with adequate space and protecting them from cold, damp, heat, rain, wind or other threats to health, structural hazards, and disease vectors. The physical safety of occupants must be guaranteed as well. The Committee encourages States parties to comprehensively apply the Health Principles of Housing 5/ prepared by W.H.O which view housing as the environmental factor most frequently associated with conditions for disease in epidemiological analyses; i.e. inadequate and deficient housing and living conditions are invariably associated with higher mortality and morbidity rates.” read full story / add a comment

Dylan Haskins is running as an Independent in Dublin South East. He's young, idealistic and already done many interesting things in his 23 years, from being a DIY punk setting up an all ages punk music gig venue to film making to helping set up Exchange in Dublin. Now he's running for election in tomorrows Irish elections. Young and naive, perhaps. But a positive breath of fresh air, absolutely. Ireland is fucked at present, maybe Dylan and his bold (anarcho)punk inspired ideas might be exactly whats needed to get things on track? read full story / add a comment

Given it is just days away from the election and a new government, most likely to be led by Fine Gael, many are probably wondering what exactly is the current state of Ireland and what are the prospects for recovery. In short, things are bad and a recovery is very unlikely. There are also wider and bigger global issues and we are unprepared and should be doing something about it now. read full story / add a comment

The community sector is being urged to sit up and take action to prevent it being seen as an easy target by both the Assembly and Westminster when the budget cuts are finalised. The call came at a public meeting in Omagh on Thursday night (17th February) organised by trade union SIPTU, which addressed how vulnerable the community sector will be to the budget cuts. The crowd was made up of a cross section of local councillors, community group and resident association representatives from the Omagh area. read full story / add a comment

Gholam-Reza Khademizadeh, the head of the Supreme Association of Labour Associations (SALA), has announced that 43 per cent of Iranian workers live under the poverty line. This is a big admission by the leader of one of the Iranian regime’s bogus so-called labour organisations. Fathollah Bayat, the leader of another fake pro-regime organisation, the Union of Contract Workers, has gone even further by saying that 85 per cent of urban households live below the absolute poverty line! read full story / add a comment
