Today, in an even more meaningless exercise then normal, a minority of the population of Ireland will choose between two almost identical options as to who will implement the ECB / IMF austerity plans for southern Ireland. Outside of this plan the wealthiest 1% will continue to set economic policy tomorrow as they did yesterday and have throughout the last decades. The electoral circus we are now going through provides the rest of us with the illusion of control even though deep down almost everyone acknowledges the ritual as having no real impact on what policies are actually implemented. read full story / add a comment ![]()

“Office Of The High Commissioner Of Human Rights The right to adequate housing (Art.11 (1)) : . 12/13/1991. CESCR General comment 4. (General Comments) Habitability. Adequate housing must be habitable, in terms of providing the inhabitants with adequate space and protecting them from cold, damp, heat, rain, wind or other threats to health, structural hazards, and disease vectors. The physical safety of occupants must be guaranteed as well. The Committee encourages States parties to comprehensively apply the Health Principles of Housing 5/ prepared by W.H.O which view housing as the environmental factor most frequently associated with conditions for disease in epidemiological analyses; i.e. inadequate and deficient housing and living conditions are invariably associated with higher mortality and morbidity rates.” read full story / add a comment ![]()

Dylan Haskins is running as an Independent in Dublin South East. He's young, idealistic and already done many interesting things in his 23 years, from being a DIY punk setting up an all ages punk music gig venue to film making to helping set up Exchange in Dublin. Now he's running for election in tomorrows Irish elections. Young and naive, perhaps. But a positive breath of fresh air, absolutely. Ireland is fucked at present, maybe Dylan and his bold (anarcho)punk inspired ideas might be exactly whats needed to get things on track? read full story / add a comment ![]()

Given it is just days away from the election and a new government, most likely to be led by Fine Gael, many are probably wondering what exactly is the current state of Ireland and what are the prospects for recovery. In short, things are bad and a recovery is very unlikely. There are also wider and bigger global issues and we are unprepared and should be doing something about it now. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The community sector is being urged to sit up and take action to prevent it being seen as an easy target by both the Assembly and Westminster when the budget cuts are finalised. The call came at a public meeting in Omagh on Thursday night (17th February) organised by trade union SIPTU, which addressed how vulnerable the community sector will be to the budget cuts. The crowd was made up of a cross section of local councillors, community group and resident association representatives from the Omagh area. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Hands off the People of Iran (HOPI) will host a film & discussion night on Thursday 10th March at 7.pm in the Teacher’s Club, Parnell Square, Dublin 1. The Circle (information below), a film directed by Jafar Panahi will be shown and the 'Free Panahi! Free all political prisoners!' campaign will be launched. Jafar Panahi has had a savage six-year jail sentence imposed on him, plus a 20-year ban on making films and travelling abroad, for the 'crime' of planning to make a film about the mass movement for democracy that spilled onto the streets of major iranian cities in 2009. read full story / add a comment |
