Just before today's march in support of the people of Gaza, a number of activists marked the shelves of the Marks and Spencer's stores in Dublin with stickers bearing the slogan: Stop the Slaughter in Gaza- Boycott Israeli Goods. Although not everything for sale in M&S comes from Israel, the company has a unique relationship with the Zionist state, judging support for the country as a fundamental business objective. As Naomi Klein argues in her article from thenation.com (reprinted in the Guardian today), Israel's leaders can be comfortable that there is no economic cost to their genocidal actions in Palestine. The Israeli stockmarket has actually risen since the attack on Gaza began. read full story / add a comment

Approximately 1,200 people attended - it was a spirited protest with some very good speeches. Many joined the march as it made its way from Daunt Square down the length of Patrick Street, down Merchants Quay and then into Parnell Place where it halted near the CIE bus station - where bus drivers are organising a collection for the people of Gaza. Then there were a few more addresses and the march turned round and retraced its steps back to Daunt Square. So far as I am aware nobody from either Fine Gael or Fianna Fail was there - but good representation from Socialist Workers Party, Socialist Party, a Green Party councillor speaking for himself, Sinn Fein, Kathy Sinnott MEP. Representatives from Cork Muslim Community spoke as did Dr Hamid Abas, of the Deaprt of Micro Science at UCC - who is also Chair of the Cork Muslim Group. Present also was Humaira, Cahirperson of the Women of the World Group in Ireland. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Israel has been using a huge amount of munitions and explosives in its assault on Gaza. War crimes have been committed during this assault in which over 800 Palestinian people have been killed including as many as 250 children. Over the past 48 hours four Hercules military aircraft landed and were refuelled at Shannon airport. Their destination is not yet known, but in recent times only about four military aircraft were refuelled at Shannon per month. The possibility exists that Israel is being resupplies with munitions expended in its murderous attacks on Palestinians by aircraft transiting through Ireland and Irish airspace with the permission of the Irish Government. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Organised by the Israeli Courage to Refuse group, some 200 people protested outside the Israeli Ministry of Defence this evening against the wanton killing in Gaza, considerably down from the 10,000 who attended last Sunday's demo but in the light of last Tuesday's protest in Jaffa and yesterday's in Tel Aviv, the numbers were still heartening. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The artist has undertaken a period of research in the ICA London's archive, focusing on two seminal events – the exhibition When Attitudes Become Form (1971) and the conference The State of British Art, A Debate (1978). Each connects to debates around art-making and organisation: Pierce presents both the practical remnants of institutional organisation, including redundant pedestals and archival documents; and the broader concerns of political organisation and protest through interviews and documentation, including video of a workshop where participants acted out gestures and recited quotes from bystanders at political demonstrations in the US between 1968-2008. read full story / add a comment

Marks and Spencer's won the The Queen's Award For Enterprise Innovation in 2000 for the development of "Secret Support" lingerie. It has been said that every woman in England used to own at least one pair of M&S knickers, because if she didn't buy them herself, her mother would. In Ireland, the company has operated successfully for a number of years, although a 1990's plan to place a Marks and Spencers store in close proximity to every Dunnes Stores outlet in the country came to nothing. A recent round of store closures and job losses in Britain has not had an effect on M&S shops in Ireland, since the company is so successful here. However, activists in Britain are often surprised by the lack of awareness in this country of the nasty side of Marks and Spencers. It's not just the lingerie that has "secret support". read full story / add a comment ![]()

Alrighty netizens? So, the last of the turkey sandwiches have been dusted off and New Year's day hangover has become a memory as faint as that beer stain on the new carpet. Well, we here in Indymedia.ie have a favour to ask. We are hoping you have it in your hearts to extend the season of good will just a little bit longer. Just long enough to come down for banter and dance at a fundraiser we are organizing on January 15th, one of our little irregular efforts to boost the coffers of our decrepit server fund.
As editors, we more than most, realise that Indymedia.ie has seen it's ups and downs in contributions and content over the past while. Editors have come and gone, and the very nature of online publishing and user generated content has been fundamentally changed with the Web 2.0 revolution. But one clear fact remains, once the dust of discussion has settle: the Irish movement have yet to create a media outlet with the reach and scope of Indymedia.ie. Until something better comes along, Indymedia.ie remains a vital communicative node for those in struggle in Ireland, it bonds us together where usually we fracture. So, here comes the begging hand..... ![]()

In a recent article in the Irish Times, Young Green Party chairperson Barra Rowntree expressed his disappointment that the large Dublin Gaza protest had been disrupted by "a small group of fanatics". Speaking after attending the protest, Roantree said the fact some people had used the opportunity to burn the Israeli flag and dress children in military fatigues was "not only unhelpful, but utterly contradictory to the aims of the world peace movement": "Those who burn flags and glorify violence only fan the flames of the tragic conflict in the Middle East." read full story / add a comment ![]()
