Yes, brought to you courtesy of Obama. Paraguays democratically elected President was deposed in a parliamentary coup. Shamus Cooke explains how the Obama Administration are responsible. Full text at link. It's obvious that the President's real crimes are that he chose to ally himself more closely with Paraguay's left, which in reality means the working and poor masses of the country, who, like other Latin American countries, choose socialism as their form of political expression. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Today the AGM of Mayo Co. council was disrupted by a high pitched grinding noise; a recording of the sounds that came from Shell's compound in Aghoose during the June bank holiday weekend. Local residents aimed to demonstrate how they were ignored when they tried to complain about this disturbance which lasted for four days, and were told the council offices were closed on the bank holiday. read full story / add a comment ![]()

RTE has upheld a complaint against Eoghan Harris and Gerry Gregg's short television documentary An Tost Fada ('The Long Silence') on two counts (Sunday Times, 24 June 2012 - see article below and letters back and forth to RTE). The complaint, RTE’s response and reply to RTE are attached here as separate PDF files - right-click and save them to read. At least one programme mistake resulted from suppression of information. Other very serious errors in the programme were not addressed by RTE. I have asked RTE to address them and to make a balancing programme. I have also asked RTE to bring back its abandoned policy of using a historical adviser on such programmes. read full story / add a comment ![]()

For those of us who like a drink, but don't see ourselves as the type to march around with signs when banksters and politicians rob us and lose us our jobs, but still feel a tear when the anthem is played after the footy, here's a way we can get some relief and at the same time show our disdain for the crooks that helped get us into this bind. Lager louts and those with distended bladders who feel like "you're a nation" still, Here's an effective protest you can believe in! Go with the flow people ;-) read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Tuesday 26th June, from 5-6.30pm at Dublin’s Spire on O’Connell St, the IPSC will hold a solidarity vigil for three Palestinian political prisoners who are now on hunger strike. One of them is in “imminent danger of death” according to human rights organisations in Palestine and Israel. The Irish media has refused to cover this story and the Irish government has refused to act to save the lives of these men. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Charles Taylor’s sentencing to 50 years’ imprisonment on 11 counts of war crimes is undeniably momentous. The counter-revolution is on the march in Syria. It is important that all socialists realise this and do not end up supporting the imperialists who are waging this war through mercenaries and fundamentalists. Full text at link. Over the last few weeks Socialist Worker has finally admitted what has been obvious for months: the uprising in Syria is not purely and simply a popular revolution. Editor Judith Orr concedes that there are “competing forces” involved and that the imperialists, together with reactionary Arab regimes, are bent on imposing their own ‘solution’. “But at the same time,” she concludes, “we must support the mass popular revolt from below that aims to bring down Assad’s brutal regime” (June 23). Back in March Socialist Worker published a highly critical article by Sami Ramadani, who commented that, for the Socialist Workers Party, “Wishful thinking has replaced materialist analysis. We have to recognise that the imperialist-backed Arab counterrevolution has, in the short term, regained the initiative and is on the offensive.” While the protests in Syria “began spontaneously and were mostly led by progressives demanding radical political reform”, it is now clear that, “as in Libya, pro-Nato factions have captured the initiative” (March 24). read full story / add a comment

In the last number of weeks I have been digging in relation to the newly appointed head of SFI Professor Mark Ferguson. What I have found - seems to be slightly hidden from the Irish taxpayers. It is very subtle but yet constructive. What I have found is completely fact and can be checked on Google and on various newspapers Ireland and UK. The one in particular I found most helpful was the Manchester Evening News. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Last week while covering the football in Poland, Pat Kenny's show on RTE radio 1, decided to interview Irish fracker, Oisin Fanning, chairman of San Leon, a company fracking for shale gas in Poland. People contacted the show and demanded the topic recieve balanced coverage and not just a pro-industry rant - eventually RTE agreed to allow Ewa Sufin of the Polish Green Party on air. The usual industry spin and lies being repeated on RTE by Oisin Fanning were exposed by what Ewa Sufin had to say about fracking in her native Poland and why an EU wide ban must be put in place on this industry. Below is a transcript of what Ewa Sufin said - you can listen to Oisin Fanning's interview via the RTE link below - iv starts at 1hr.27m read full story / add a comment ![]()

King Canute lives! But these guys actually think they can turn the sea back by denying it! Article at url. Political satirist Stephen Colbert's solution to unfavourable climate science is simple: "If your science gives you a result that you don't like, pass a law saying that the result is illegal. Problem solved." Legislators in North Carolina are apparently of the same mindset. When a state-appointed commission announced that North Carolinians could expect 39 inches of sea-level rise by 2100, the Senate responded with a bill that legally prevents the Division of Coastal Management from using the climate model that forecasts fast-rising sea levels. Instead, the legislators would like to see coastal management use only a linear model, which predicts a mere 8-inch rise by the same year. read full story / add a comment ![]()

War against Iran has already begun, Sanctions and Malware are the oening acts of war against Iran. Yassamine Mather writes that those who condemn the crimes of the regime should also condemn the crimes of imperialism and its agents, . As the prospect of failure of the third round of talks between Iran and the 5+1 countries looms, the US-led soft war on Iran has been ratcheted up with the threat of further sanctions and the launching of a powerful computer virus targeting Iran’s nuclear research facilities. The virus has already spread to the commercial sectors, including the oil and banking industries. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

We strongly condemn Fine GAEL Councellor Seosamh O Laoi’s claims that the west coast seal population needs to be culled [to protect the fishery industry]. In reality, the decline in fish stocks is due to over over-fishing by the very industry he is involved in. This man, who is himself involved in aquaculture - said that representatives of the fishing organisations should sit down with the relevant experts and work out a culling strategy. He also reminisces to olden days where fishermen carried guns in their boats, and "kept the place clean." read full story / add a comment ![]()
