An Injunction has been granted by the High Court to prevent the Labour Court from varying the Registered Employment Agreement that is in force in the Electrical Contracting Industry until such time as its validity is proven. NECI claims the agreement is not valid as employer parties to the agreement represent only an estimated 10% of the employers in the industry. The proposed increase will cost each employer employing an electrician for 39 hour week, €71,062.24 per year .This includes Pension, PAYE/PRSI,Holiday pay. Commendably, Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power on 19th June announced a funding package of €241,000 for the NGO, Medical Aid for Palestinians, the funds to be used for a maternal and child health outreach programme in the Nahr El Bared Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon with Mr Power promising to further support the Palestinian refugee population.

Commendably, to encourage "democratic" reforms in beleaguered Cuba, on the same date, the EU agreed to scrap sanctions with EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner opining to reporters that: "Of course there is clear language on human rights, on the detention of prisoners." Reprehensibly ...

Last weekend’s downpours failed to dampen the spirits of the hundreds of people who gathered for the inaugural Galway summer solstice festival ‘Saoire na Sraide’. Gardaí reported 500 staff and students at the Integrate Ireland Language and Training Centre (IILT) in Dublin marched from Liberty Hall to the Department of Education offices in Marlboro Street at 1.00 pm on Friday, June 20, 2008.
