This morning I bought the Irish Times and got a headache. Two things caused deep annoyance; and they are related: the State will pursue one of our best Heritage campaigners for 500,000 Euros costs and a letter in the Letter's Page talks of Cregganbaun and Killary in relation to Eamon Ryan's granting of licences to prospectors for gold.Killary Harbour is a Fjord, it provided a place for Wittgenstein to think and its got a quality of silence that should be left undisturbed-but thats what you get when self-publicists get into the Dail- Rattle and Hum. read full story / add a comment

Usually around this time of year, us grunts still on active service duty for Indymedia Ireland, spend a week or so trawling the archive with our virtual nets. Sometimes we return with a catch of material that we format into a review of the year. And other times - like last year - short-staffed and burnt out, we simply aren't up to the effort. read full story / add a comment

A group of leading Chinese lawyers and academics have demanded immediate abolition of the country's infamous system of "laojiao" (re-education through labour), saying it is a serious impediment to efforts to bring about the rule of law in China. The "re-education through labour" system allows the police to jail everyone, from political dissidents to drug addicts and prostitutes, for up to four years without going through the courts. There has been talk of scrapping it as part of legal reforms, but so far only cosmetic changes have been made. But now 69 well-known experts and rights advocates have petitioned the legislature to immediately examine and abolish the system, saying it contravenes the Chinese constitution. read full story / add a comment

Striking Classroom Assistant held a protest outside the Belfast office of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions on Monday to demand a trade union inquiry into claims that the majority of Classroom Assistants have voted to accept managements offer. The offer was forced through a meeting of the Joint Negotiating Council for education workers in Northern Ireland last Friday by the employers and GMB/UNISON. The decision was taken despite the opposition of the biggest non teaching education trade union, NIPSA, and the abstention of T&G. During the period of strike action Stormont Education Minister Catriona Ruaine has made repeated calls for NIPSA to ballot its members. NIPSA has pointed out that every offer made by management has been brought to consultation meetings of members but in an effort to clarify the situation and to remove the Ministers excuse for not negotiating offered to ballot members last week. This offer was ignored. read full story / add a comment |
