Last Saturday, February 15th, saw the largest demonstration in Dublin since the 1970’s. Approximately 150,000 (though figures vary, with the mainstream media cutting this number by half) people from dozens of different organisations and most from none gathered at the Garden of Remembrance to demonstrate their outrage at the upcoming war with Iraq. The use of the Garden of Remembrance as a meeting point was not unusual, though the sheer mass of numbers gathered all around Parnell Square and spilling out onto O’Connell Street was evidence of the massive popular disapproval in Ireland at the incipient escalation of hostilities against Iraq and in particular, of the use of Shannon airport as a refuelling depot for the U.S. military in transit. read full story / add a comment

Hi Everyone, Just to let you know that after the huge success of last Saturday we are holding an Irish Anti War Movement meeting in the Parish Hall in Maynooth (across the road from the Catholic Church) on Thursday night at 8.30pm. We want to build the movement in North Kildare/West Dublin, have some organisational structure, and discuss what last Saturday really means. If everyone who was in the Glenroyal last month at our last meeting could come again with ideas and friends that would be great. Everyone is welcome on Thursday night. At the moment we are on the side that’s winning, so lets keep the pressure on! Cheers David Lynch read full story / add a comment

The very public dispute between left-wing rabbi Michael Lerner from "Tikkun" (a progressive Jewish community in SF) and anti-war organisers from A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism - associated with the Workers World party) continued right up to Saturday's day of action. Read the links if you are interested; in short, Lerner, a long-time anti-war activist and critic of Israel wanted to speak at a Feb 15th rally, but claims that he was prevented from doing so; ANSWER's response is that he publicily criticised ANSWER in the media and thus violated a prior agreement. His criticism was that ANSWER was linking the Iraq issue to an extreme anti-Israel position. read full story / add a comment

Far from being braced for the worst, Americans are full of fear that an attack could hit them at any time. This fear may itself be their most terrible enemy of all.
