It is becoming increasingly obvious that the US led war on Iraq was fought on the basis of lies. No weapons of Mass Destruction have been uncovered and the 'Liberators' are facing increasing Iraqi resistance. The initail welcome of the fall of Saddam Hussein has turned to hostility to the brutality of the occupying forces. From a short war US strategists are now talking of a five year occupation of Iraq. The spectere of a Middle Eastern Vietnam is becoming more of a reality every day.

As the recognition of the reality of the occupation increases, it is important that we begin to remobilise the the antiwar movement. A number of important events are taking place this week as part of that. read full story / add a comment

Reuters has an interesting piece on the suspension of military aid to over 50 countries because they are supporting the setting up of the international crimainal court. One of the countries is Ireland, what do we get the money/aid for?

Minutes and reports from three meetings held in Belfast during July, working towards the establishment of a Belfast/North East Social Forum as part of the developing Irish Social Forum. The first two sections are minutes from an ad hoc steering group. The third section is a report from a public meeting held on June 24th. Further meetings and tie ins with other Irish Social Forum gatherings are detailed in the conclusions of the public meeting. read full story / add a comment

The fifth Grassroots Gathering ran from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th in Dublin. Over 160 libertarian activists from different movements opposed to neo-liberalism and war took part in a very ambitious programme of events. The levels of energy were high, and participants seemed to take control of the event for themselves without problems. A highpoint was the involvement of two Argentinian community activists from the massive movement against neo-liberalism there.

Key outcomes include setting up working groups towards actions around the World Economic Forum meeting this October, agreement to hold an assembly in a few weeks' time to take this further, agreement to keep anti-war networks alive in some form, and the offer by Galway to host the next Gathering after the WEF. read full story / add a comment
