dublin / arts and media / news report Saturday February 04, 2006 20:08 by Seomra Spraoi 2 images
After months of searching, followed by cleaning, scrubbing, sanding, painting and varnishing, the Seomra Spraoi (room of fun) collective has begun to open its doors. The collective took a space some months back in a prime city centre location, Middle Abbey Street, and soon began to have small meetings, events and gatherings there. At present, the centre is open 2-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Anyone can drop in and view the forgotten zine library and the Bad Books library, have a cup of tea or simply relax and spend some time finding out more about what’s going on in Dublin. If you would like to use the space anytime contact Seomra Spraoi via the website, mailing list or email: [email protected] ALL EVENTS CANCELLED DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES read full story / add a comment

Back into the theme of my recent submissions, that the model for our society is so flawed and broken that we cannot fix it, but must replace it. This time, I explore body language and how it is assimilated into advertising. This leads to an introduction into mind control and behaviour modification and how we use these techniques. A long read, but a solid argument. Are our Government and 'Big business," a pack of liars? Yes read full story / add a comment

A protest by Irish fishermen is currently (Friday Feb 3rd 1pm) taking place on the Liffey by the IFSC in Dublin. A whole fleet of trawlers are currently on the Liffey making a racket with their horns. They are protesting over a new Sea Fisheries Maritime Jurisdiction Bill currently before the Dáil. Among the proposals int the new bill is an amendment to allow the Irish Navy open fire on trawlers, who disobeyed instructions. This has since been scrapped but there are many other amendments before the Dail which challenge the rights of these workers. See below for further details:- read full story / add a comment

Since 1998, when Hugo Chavez Frias became president of the newly declared Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the charismatic president, has emerged as one of the most influential and radical leaders in Latin America. His reforms and plans, if realised could alter the face of Venezuelan society, if not that of Latin America. Loathed by many Venezuelans, revered by even more, Chavez has reached almost messianic status as the leader in a country where the socially underprivileged, the poor and the uneducated masses have long since felt disenfranchised by the political process. read full story / add a comment
