Supposed ‘hard fight’ to secure guarantees on Lisbon Treaty: a clever tactic to mislead says McKenna

Not one single word of the Lisbon Treaty will be altered by these guarantees, which is why they do not need to be ratified by the National Parliaments of the 27 Member States. The so called ‘legal guarantees’ are nothing more than an interpretation by EU Heads of State as to what they think the Lisbon Treaty means. However, if the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, it will be the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg which will interpret Lisbon. The EU Court is the only body authorised under the European Treaties to interpret the Treaties themselves and decide how they should be applied. The political decision and agreement of a particular group of EU Prime Ministers and Presidents, which is what we are being presented with, cannot and will not decide what Lisbon means. read full story / add a comment

Carers and their loved ones who receive roll-over respite care in Cherryorchard Hospital have been informed by the HSE that the newly refurbished Beech Unit at Cherryorchard Hospital is to close indefintely. The management at the hospital have told Councillor Brid Smith that the closure of the Beech is due to staff shortages for the Summer months. However, they could not give any guarantees as to when it will reopen. Nurses who are taking annual leave and maternity leave are not being replaced. The HSE embargo on recruitment is once again seriously hurting patients receiving respite care and their families. read full story / add a comment

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called for the international community to act to protect journalists reporting from Iran where the regime has turned its fire on local and foreign media accusing them of stirring up trouble in the wake of disputed elections. "There are two issues we are concerned about," said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary . "The physical safety of our colleagues and the threat to democracy if the government succeeds in using the media blackout and intimidation of journalists to control the information space." read full story / add a comment

Today we are witnessing the ordinary people of Iran finally having had enough with the Ayatollahs and the Guardian Council. It is our duty if we value freedom and democracy to support them. I call on all who support and sympathise with them to make their voice heard and protest at the Iranian Embassy all this weekend. In 2004 Labour was voted in as the largest group, ending Fianna Fail’s domination of the council. Instead of change, the people were treated to a game of musical chairs, with Labour entering a deal to divvy up the Mayorship and committee chairs with Fine Gael, and the sole Green and PD Councillors. When that deal broke down, Labour concluded an arrangement with Fianna Fail. The merry go round now continues with Labour in a deal for the new council with Fine Gael. read full story / add a comment

Any person who is stopped and detained by Immigration Officers in Northern Ireland can now call the free and confidential Helpline number. A new arts and literary publication featuring contributions by Francesco Clemente, Seamus Heaney, Nalini Malani, David Mitchell, Sean Scully, Colm Tóibín and a host of other leading art world figures, will be launched by the Irish Museum of Modern Art at 6.00pm on Thursday 11 June 2009. Boulevard Magenta is the brain child of IMMA’s Director, Enrique Juncosa, himself a noted poet, who has brought together a collection of works ranging across the visual arts, prose, poetry, music, film and architecture for the first issue of the biannual magazine. Young people in Ireland are not as uninterested in the upcoming elections as many people might think. Instead they are finding the political system inaccessible, confusing and uninspiring. That’s the view of the SpunOut.ie National Youth Organisation, which reaches 100,000s of young people each year.
