A quote from Ulysses - more than 3 lines!!@!!
--People do not know how dangerous lovesongs can be, the auric egg of
Russell warned occultly. The movements which work revolutions in the
world are born out of the dreams and visions in a peasant's heart on the
hillside. For them the earth is not an exploitable ground but the living
mother. The rarefied air of the academy and the arena produce the
sixshilling novel, the musichall song. France produces the finest flower
of corruption in Mallarme but the desirable life is revealed only to the
poor of heart, the life of Homer's Phaeacians. As Dublin celebrates Bloomsday, it turns out that any reading or publication of more than 3 lines of Ulysses is protected by copyright. Policing this is made more difficult by the brief period that the work was out of copyright in the 1990's before the extension of copyright period for 70 years after artists death. The Irish Dail had to pass a special law to enable it to mount an exhibition of Joycean manuscripts, there are stories doing the rounds of copyright lawyers scouring the city for people quoting more than 3 lines from Ulysses and the Joyce breakfast had to take place with no readings from Joyce. You can still read Ulysses thanks to the internet – but no quoting, at least not in
Ireland, on Bloomsday

"Hey Ronnie Reagan, I’m black and I’m pagan, 'In the few days before Reagan arrived, sleepy old Galway was transformed: the town was invaded by secret servicemen with cropped hair and dark suits, who spoke into hidden microphones on their cuffs; the black Mercedes population trebled; and the unusual helicopter activity was menacingly suggestive of ‘Apocolypse Now’. Those of us who had friends in the vicinity of the University were unable to visit them for a few days.' Follow the link below for more of the History lesson:

From the IMC Ireland Newswire:
The Dublin Grassroots Network expresses its solidarity with all anti-authoritarian groups protesting at the G8 summit in and around Atlanta, USA, from June 8th to 10th. The G8 is the pinnacle of hierarchy and authority. It is a rich man's club seeking to continue the exploitation of the third world and the planet's resources in order to keep its own pockets lined. .............It is important to show resistance at a street level to these leader's lavish banquets, paid for with our taxes from IMC Atlanta For the first time in four decades, local protesters and their supporters marched today through the streets of Savannah to say "No" to pre-emptive war, immediate withdrawal from Iraq, and repeal of the USA Patriot Act. What may seem tame to those of us coming from New York or Massachusetts was a courageous and major event in the context of Savannah, where protest marches simply do not exist. national / rights, freedoms and repression Tuesday June 08, 2004 22:03 by Students for a No Vote
Students from Colleges across Ireland have formed an alliance in opposition to the proposals in this week’s referendum on citizenship. Students’ Unions in Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University College Dublin (UCD), Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (DLIADT) have all passed motions calling for a “No” vote in Friday’s poll. They have now joined forces with the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), the representative body of over 250,000 students in Ireland, in calling for the referendum to be defeated. Paul Dillon, President of UCD Students’ Union, says that UCDSU took a decision to oppose the referendum “because students have always been to the forefront of human rights issues.” “This is clearly an issue of human rights – we are shifting the roots of this country from inclusiveness to elitist bloodline citizenship in a way that demonises those of different ethnic origins.” “This referendum is not about closing a ‘loophole,’” believes Dillon. “It is a fundamental shift in how we define citizenship. It means that children born to EU and non-EU students and workers, who add so much to our economy and culture, will not be citizens, whereas descendants of Irish people living outside Ireland, with no other connections with the country, will have citizenship rights.” Dermot Looney, an activist in the UCD Anti-Deportation Campaign, says that “refugees, asylum-seekers and others from abroad are not responsible for the state of the country’s public services – this government are.” “This is a cynical ploy on behalf of the PD/FF government to take away from their failure to properly fund public services such as health and education,” concluded Looney. “The government has employed racist sentiment against one of the most vulnerable sections in our society - pregnant asylum seekers, many of whom are fleeing poverty and violence that we can barely imagine. We cannot let this government destroy our reputation for humanity.” Related Offsite Links
