Today’s demonstration against the Canadian seal hunt went great, better than expected! We had a wonderful turn out, people just kept coming and going from 12noon til 2pm today Thursday March 23rd 2006! Volunteers from ARAN came from Limerick, Galway, Sligo, Meath and joined with our friends in Dublin! Many other caring people could not make it due to work commitments but called, written and emailed the Canadian embassy on the day, we also had a wonderful member of the Canadian public at this demo too and she now speaks out against this hunt and much more on animal cruelty. ... read full story / add a comment

Last Saturday the third anniversary of the US-led imperialist invasion of Iraq was marked in Dublin by a demonstration and march of up to 1000 people through the city centre. This turnout was a major disappointment and highlighted the inertia which has affected the antiwar movement since the highpoint of February 2003 when over 100,000 people took to the streets of the nation’s capital. Here you can read the report and find out how to download the flyer from Workers Power. ... read full story / add a comment

21 years after the Bhopal Gas disaster, which has resulted in 20,000 deaths to date, survivors have still not received justice, or adequate compensation, and the factory site itself has yet to be cleaned up. Many Bhopalis are still drinking poisoned water, while the officials responsible for the plant, including Union Carbide CEO Warren Anderson, continue to abscond from facing legal proceedings for their callous negligence. Thus, a group of sixty Bhopalis have embarked on an 800 km walk for justice from Bhopal to New Delhi, where they will meet with the Prime Minister and voice their demands, following it up with a hunger strike if action is not taken. They have been on foot for more than a month now and are due to arrive into India's capital city and political Centre on 25th March. ... read full story / add a comment

A crowd of less than 800 people gathered at Parnell square for the annual IAWM march to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the Iraq invasion on Saturday.

All the usual suspects turned out including the Labour Party, Socialist Party, SWP and CPI as well as the Cosaintori, PANA and “code pink” a womens anti-war organisation.

Anarchist youth had issued a call for a red and black bloc to meet at Parnell square and roughly 80 anarchists turned up. This contingent was easily the most vibrant and colourful part of the march with over twenty red and black flags flying and several large banners carried by the bloc including the WSM, Anarchist Youth and “Anarchists against the War” banners. The bloc slotted itself in at the front of the march for a change with about 50 people ahead of us. The trolley-based sound system blasted out Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” as Gardai took up flank either side of us. The Garda presence seemed to be entirely concentrated around the red and black bloc with a CCTV camera mounted on a Garda van leading the march.
