8 Sudanese men who came off a hungerstrike on the 9th June, after 19 days without food, face deportation from Sweden to their home country despite their protests. After almost three weeks camped out in the centre of Gothenburg their public hungerstrike culminated at the city migration board offices (Migrationsverket) with the presentation of a petition of 7,000 signatures supporting their plea for asylum. The 8 are now continuing their campaign while awaiting the verdict on their individual cases which is due later in the summer.

“I am freezing, I have a pain in my stomach and feel sick. We will all visit a doctor tomorrow morning” said Dafalla Ohmar one of the hunger strikers said afterwards. ... read full story / add a comment

There was a heavy Garda presence (approx 30 members of the force) as 500 people gathered to take part in a peace event organised by the Galway Alliance Against War to express their opposition to warplanes, helicopter gun-ships and four British pilots, who have fought in the illegal war in Iraq, participating in the Salthill Air Show. The 99 Red Balloon event, named after the antiwar pop song, was being held in the Claddagh, 2 miles to the east of Salthill. ... read full story / add a comment

On the 7th of June, Peter Preston having met no satisfactory explanation for a serious assault on his daughter which caused grevious bodily harm resulting in 25 stitches to her face - undertook to refuse food in protest.
One week later he took up position on Kildare street, the front entrance of the Dail (the Irish parliament). His fast has been sustained since then, & yet no-one really seems to have noticed other than the independent TD Finian Mc Grath.

Maybe a person of middle age with a scarred 19 year old daughter protesting on the street is not so newsworthy.
Maybe the menu at the Unicorn restaurant is more interesting.
Maybe his handwritten statement was difficult to read at first.
Maybe he's asking awkward questions in a manageable way. ... read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War has claimed that attempts are being made by the authorities in Galway to stop an alternative air show being organised for Nimmo’s Pier, Claddagh at 1.30pm this Sunday. The local peace group plans to release 99 red balloons as a symbol of their opposition to what they term the “Salthill War Show”. This evening a member of the Gardaí went to the home of Niall Farrell, a member of GAAW, to inform him that the Superintendent wished to discuss “safety aspects” of the peace invent. ... read full story / add a comment

“If we can not know whether the courts are applying the law as passed by our legislators without editing or interference from another source our sovereignty is violated and every Act is now questionable as to its veracity. It also raises the huge question as to what subversive group has edited the legislation before it was published by the government stationery office”.

In this instance where it applies to the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 it means that Constitutional protections given to parents very likely have been violated by the courts for the past forty years through implementation of incorrect text.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions how we can get an actual copy of the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 as actually passed by the Oireachtas and signed by the President from the office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, as the enrolled text which are by Constitutional mandate held there are the only “conclusive evidence of the provisions of such law” then please tell us. ... read full story / add a comment

While Over 20,000 people marched in Vienna yesterday in opposition to George Bush's arrival, Austria's "KinderGarten Anarchists" (KGA) used the opportunity to meet other young anarchists and spread their ideas to the youth of their nation.

George Bush became the first US president to visit Austria in over 27years yesterday as he arrived for an EU-US summit similar to the one held in Shannon (Ireland) in 2004. Police bomb squads blew up three suspicious packages and closed down the airport-city motorway in preparation for the visit while planned protests passed off peacefully with only a handful of arrests despite huge police numbers.

Next Tuesday 27th June in the year of our Lord 2006, UCD’s esteemed Craic Society will be hosting a fundraiser to help pay the (substantial) fines of our battle-weary believers, victims of a witch-hunt by Der College Authorities in September of last year.

After organising a fun-filled outdoor piss-up on campus, these Soldiers of Craic were victimised and fined by the college authorities, who seem hell-bent on forcing us to drink overpriced warm pints of Fosters for the rest of our lives instead of being at one with nature and Buckfast.
