A large force of Gardai defended the exclusive Old Head of Kinsale Golf club from a gathering of walkers and protestors. Although this was the first time that protesters failed to gain access to the walk, a spirited sit-down protest at the gates to the golf links ensured that ‘business at usual’ did not happen. The next protest date has been set for Sunday, June 29th. ... read full story / add a comment

At time of writing it remains unclear whether a deal will be cobbled together in the North. No doubt the sight of George Bush taking time off from the bombing of Iraq to support the GFA flattered the national ego, allowing us to maintain the fantasy that the Troubles are a matter of earth-shaking importance. In a week when a thousand Congolese villagers were massacred, this was a debatable point. Anyway, we have to wonder why the peace train has been delayed yet again. Unionists and their hangers-on have an easy answer: Castlereagh, Colombia, and the Northern Ireland Office. ... read full story / add a comment

As the arm-chair crusaders of the conservative media celebrate another triumph, it’s important for those of us who opposed the war to form our own perspective. First of all, anyone who cares about democracy and human rights should be delighted to see the people of Iraq tearing down statues of Saddam Hussein and desecrating his palaces. After a quarter-century of brutal tyranny, they’ve earned the right to celebrate, and it’s not surprising to see many people greet American and British soldiers as liberators (after all, the people of Czechoslovakia greeted the Red Army with open arms in 1945 - it recieved a frostier reception in 1968). ... read full story / add a comment

Des Dalton, Assistant PRO, Republican Sinn Féin May 16, 2003 "The Dublin Government, whose right-wing social and economic policies have squandered the wealth which was available to them over the past number of years, resulting in an ever widening gap between rich and poor, is now targeting the most weak and vulnerable in society. This was highlighted at the recent AGM of KARE, a Kildare based charity which provides a range of services for disabled people and their families, who are now facing a deficit of 200 000 euro for 2003 as compared to a deficit of 4.088 euro for 2002, as a result of the removal of all state funding. ... read full story / add a comment

Why has there been such silence over the landmark judgement of J Kearns in 'Horgan v. Ireland' -- Ed Horgan's case about the Constitution and helping to kill Iraqi people? Kearns had more power to stop Shannon shenanigans than any individual politician. And yet there's not a peep about it from activists campaigning against the war. ... read full story / add a comment
